The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey

This is a book based around a Russian fairy tale called The Snow Maiden. This was a beautiful and magical story. I didn't want to put it down! The first two parts are absolutely wonderful! I loved seeing the relationships between everyone changing and growing throughout the story. I loved the mystery behind Faina's background. The one complaint I had is that the third part of this book dragged on a bit. From the way the book started, I expected the whole story to be a little deeper, but everything was on the surface. Overall it was a great wintery read!

This was an excellent account of the Life of Jim Henson. It was great to read about the life of one of my favorite artists! I loved that the author interviewed so many people from Jim's life, it gave a really personal touch. I completely agree with the other reviews that the beginning dragged on. I would have preferred a less detailed account of Jim Henson's childhood, but it really picked up when he started working.

I struggled getting through this book. I almost gave up several times, but I am so glad I stuck with it and finished reading this. It's not a book where it picks up at the end with an epic finale. It is not a book where the last sentence ties everything together and leaves its readers pondering some philosophical idea. No, One Hundred years of Solitude is the same book by the end as it started out in the beginning. It is simply the story of a of a family and a town and how even when everything seems to change, it really is a lot of the same. The symbolism is excellent. The magic-realism is beautiful and really makes the uninteresting parts more tolerable. I didn't like how most of the woman were portrayed in this book, but they are also some of my favorite characters. My feelings were mixed while reading this, but when I was done and looked back on this book I only had positive feelings towards it.

I kept going back between a 4 and a 5 star review. This is definitely a very unique book. The writing is absolutely gorgeous and very atmospheric. I feel like this is a book you have to read twice. This first time through I was always wondering where the story was going to go next and how everything was going to end up. I think I missed a lot of the small details in doing this, and I would love to read it again to seek those things out.

I enjoyed reading this book. The style is very self-reflective and almost like a personal diary. In other words the writing style isn't amazing but it gets the point across. Which is perfect, because this is a comedian writing a book, not a critically acclaimed author. I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Amy Schumer herself, which I felt added more character and depth to the stories. I HIGHLY recommend listening to this one if you are interested in reading it at all. I was a fan of Amy Schumer before I read this, and I do think you have to like her style of comedy to find anything funny in this book.

This one did not live up to the hype. It was very predictable with multiple plot holes. The main character was especially frustrating, he is supposed to be an award-winning scientist and yet he can't seem to figure out what is happening before someone else (including the reader) figures it out before him. The one thing I can say about Dark Matter is that I never wanted to DNF it. It was okay, but I do not recommend it.

I wasn't completely blown away with this book, but it is an important piece of literature, and I am very happy I've read it. I love how the reader's point of view is through Offred's perspective. Not knowing exactly how everything got so bad in this dystopian future was one of my favorite parts. Because there was only a vague explanation on why this all happened the reader can fill in the blanks which makes this story relevant, even 30 years after it was first written. The ending is a bit dissatisfying, but I appreciate why it was left so open-ended. The Handmaid's Tale is an engaging, must-read book. If you haven't picked it up already I highly recommend it!

I wasn't sure what to expect re-reading this book. I never finished the series, in fact I only got to book 4 or 5 before I had decided that I had outgrown them. So, it may come as no surprise that my biggest fear in starting the series again was that it would be too childish to enjoy. Although, these books are definitely written for a young audience, that didn't ruin my experience in the least. I fell in love Lemony Snicket's quirky writing style all over again. While the Baudelaire children face some truly devastating circumstances the entire feel of the book is not as depressing as you might expect. In this way I think this series is comparable to Goosebumps. The Goosebumps books have creepy things in them, but they pull back before they get heart pounding scary. Much like how many sad things happen in A Series of Unfortunate Events but you won't find yourself sobbing over the Baudelaire's misfortunes. I'm very excited to continue this series, and I can't recommend it enough for older children (around ages 9-12) who love reading.

I wasn't sure how I would enjoy this series as an adult, but I am falling in love with them all over again! This installment was much more sad and violent than the first one. I love Uncle Monty and his reptiles. I really like that the Baudelaire's personalities are starting to be developed more. I am so excited to start the third book! I usually never read the next book in the series directly after reading the previous one, but I might have to make an exception.
