The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket
5.0
I wasn't sure what to expect re-reading this book. I never finished the series, in fact I only got to book 4 or 5 before I had decided that I had outgrown them. So, it may come as no surprise that my biggest fear in starting the series again was that it would be too childish to enjoy. Although, these books are definitely written for a young audience, that didn't ruin my experience in the least. I fell in love Lemony Snicket's quirky writing style all over again. While the Baudelaire children face some truly devastating circumstances the entire feel of the book is not as depressing as you might expect. In this way I think this series is comparable to Goosebumps. The Goosebumps books have creepy things in them, but they pull back before they get heart pounding scary. Much like how many sad things happen in A Series of Unfortunate Events but you won't find yourself sobbing over the Baudelaire's misfortunes. I'm very excited to continue this series, and I can't recommend it enough for older children (around ages 9-12) who love reading.
