Whoo. This one was. A lot. I went into this book absolutely ravenous for the continuation of the Beasts of the Briar series, and Iâm coming out of it even more so.
How can I get so many answers and still end up with twice as many questions??
This book made me miss old school portal fantasy so much.
Itâs well written, with an interesting (if predictable) storyline. As soon as I finished it, I was absolutely feral to start the second book. I have theories dammit!
But honestly, I love the characters (I would kill and die for Astrid and Marigold) and the mains are perfection. Frustrating asf (especially Ezryn), but perfect all the same.
I canât wait to see if my lore theories are correct!
This book was. Not my cup of tea. The writing itself was good. The author definitely has a talent for wielding language.
However.
The everything else was the problem.
I have no idea how this book managed to have a why choose situation with triple sword crossing and still read like a tradwife fetish work. Thatâs a special skill.
I may have deconstructed, but I was raised southern conservative, so I love a good age gap, but this made me feel ten kinds of gross. The fmc is sixteen (notably legal-ish where the author is from) and the story leans hard into that. From the fmcâs fear of âgrowing upâ to the mmcs agreeing to let her get some world experience before they make their move (while simultaneously fantasizing about her body with each other) her age is at the absolute forefront of the whole plot.
Sheâs also very ânot like other girlsâ. Intimidated by makeup, loves cooking and cleaning for the mmcs, utterly innocent and nurturing. Sheâs the ideal I used to strive for, back when my favorite accessory was the purity ring my dad gave me.
Maybe Iâm being too harsh and this book will help someone with their trauma or just be a fun read for some. It was, unfortunately, not that for me. I wonât be moving on to the next book.
Also, side note, I feel like every other line was referencing either a past book or a future one with all the random throuples being commented on. That was a weird vibe.
Yâall I spent most of this book covering my face and squealing. My God is it just cute all over!
This is a fairly angst-free read. MMC has some pretty gnarly trauma, but the cause isnât given a lot of attention or exposition and the trauma responses are pretty tame.
I love love love Tripâs love for Sam. Heâs such a puppy and Iâm just totally here for it. (Also here for the pitch switching đ)
I usually donât read femme x masc mm by women, but I genuinely enjoyed the hell out of this book and the relationship development. It was a sweet little palette cleanser and Iâll admit Iâll probably come back to see how Wyatt and Desi shake up at some point.
The absolute impotent rage I felt during the first few chapters of this book. Whoo!
This is a very heavy read. Itâs trauma centered, with the first few chapters going into graphic detail of that trauma and the rest of it centering on the main characters working through and navigating the FMCâs PTSD and rape recovery. The spice in this one is central to the plot, but if spice is the reason youâre here, maybe save this one for another time. Itâs mostly used as an anchor for the FMCâs recovery.
The star crossed inevitability of these two just gutted me while reading this. I never doubted they would persevere, but goddamn was it a hard road to get there. They earned their happy ending with blood and tears.
I wouldnât recommend this to a casual fluffy romance reader. Similarly, though it has dark elements, it doesnât feel like a dark romance, either. In fact, except for the spice, I would feel confident recommending this for a literary book club.
So if youâre in the mood for something moving, something that has the power to hurt you, I highly recommend this book.
I wasnât prepared for the emotional upheaval this book gave me. I was expecting something much less involved with the whole codependent PTSD thing. A little fluffier.
Thatâs not a bad thing, I just wasnât prepared for it.
That said, I liked this book a lot less while I was reading it than now that Iâm done. I think thatâs partially due to cockwarming not being my kink in addition to the liberal use of the F-slur early on.
It wasnât a bad book for the right reader. It just turns out it wasnât for me.
Cute end to a fun series. I was a little disappointed with this one.
The elements were all there and ot was written well, but it lacked some of the spark the other three books had. It felt like the author had gotten bored with it.
I was also hoping for some more time with Gavinâs uncles.
That said, it was still a solid book and a satisfying conclusion. I still highly recommend the series.
