Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick
4.0
I read this book back in middle school and when I found it again in the very back of my closet I just knew I had to read it again. (I suggest you should probably do that with most books you had to read in school. Because for me it’s hard to absorb the book with 20 other students around). Anyways, this book is wonderful. Who doesn’t love unlikely friendships? The book is suspenseful, funny, sad, inspiring and intense.
Dracula by Bram Stoker
2.0
Going into this book I knew very little about the actual story of Dracula. I hadn’t read the book before and I hadn’t seen any movies or shows about Dracula. As an amateur historian, the only thing that I really knew was the history that helped create Dracula.
The book was drawn out and I’ll admit that while reading I fell asleep twice while reading. This of course, happened before the first seven chapters. But don’t worry though, the story picks ups after Lucy gets bit. Which is important to the story but I still feel bad for her because I felt she deserved better.
Something that I wasn’t expecting was that Dracula wasn’t even trying to hide the fact that he was a vampire. Everyone was just oblivious. Also the book was a lot of tell but no show. They kept mentioning how horrifying Dracula was and how dangerous he was but we rarely get to see it. It’s always other characters telling us. And in my opinion, there were no compelling characters. I didn’t really care about what happened to any of the characters because they just didn’t seem to matter to me.
I adore gothic novels and Dracula is a great gothic novel, it just wasn’t for me. But I do think others would like it.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain
This book is obviously the most classic of classics. Everyone knows of Tom Sawyer, but I’ve never read the book. I’m glad I did. It was a cute and funny story. The boys are so rambunctious in this book, I think this book is a good example of boys will be boys.
It’s a fun to read about the adventures that Tom got into with Huck. so much fun that I began to ache for an adventure.
Although, there is some racism and talk of graphic violence. It did throw me off and if things like that turns you away I would suggest you skip this book.

Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert
1.0
I am very conflicted about this book. I didn’t really like it but I can still appreciate the story and moral of the story. I tried reading it once before but put it down before I even got to the second part. This time I put more effort into reading this story and finishing it.
I still couldn’t get into the story. Not only was it boring to me but extremely dramatic, and not in a good way. Some people might like it, but it just wasn’t for me. I will give the book this: Gustave Flaubert realistically tells the story of a young woman who thinks she’s in love and realizes she isn’t and then the slow drowning in a life she doesn’t really want.

Doctor Sleep by Stephen King
4.0
“...they eat screams and drink pain.”
I’ll just start this off with saying that I really enjoyed this book. Did I love it? No, but I think it’s because I finally found out what I don’t really like about Stephen King books and what I do like. For example, nearly all the Stephen King books I’ve read have pulled me in, and I really love that because few books can pull me in like his do. One thing I don’t like is that, I realized, is that in my opinion Stephen King can’t really write teenagers. He can write children well and adults well too but all the teenagers in his books seem the same. It’s something I can look past because he can write plots better than most authors.
About Doctor Sleep, specifically, I should confess that I have yet to read The Shining. Which isn’t that important even though Doctor Sleep is a sequel to The Shining. I’ve seen the movie a long time ago. So I barely remember anything but I remembered important bits, enough to understand the references to The Shining. I don’t think Doctor Sleep is going to be a classic of King’s but it is really good. It starts out creepy and the first part sets everything up so that the second part can take off running.
I think what made the book enjoyable was the relationship that forms between Dan and Abra. Abra is a young teenager who has the shining, like Dan, and because of this the antagonists are after her. Which is why Dan immediately helps her. Something that comes up a lot in this book is that what goes around comes around, and pay your debts. I really like that because in Dan’s case it makes sense.
The antagonists fall a bit flat in what they are but not what they do. They’re called The True Knot (I still don’t know why) and they’re like psychic vampires of a kind. Which I don’t feel like they are that terrifying, but Rose the Hat is the leader of The True Knot and she is a good villain in how she acts. She’s what sold me on the villains of the story.
Even with its faults Doctor Sleep is a really good book. I liked it more than It and about as much as Under The Dome and less than 11/22/63. I definitely suggest you read the book whether or not you liked The Shining or not.

Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë
3.0
I should start this review off by saying that Wuthering Heights is different from some of the other gothic novels that I have read. Personally, it wasn’t for me but I understand the appeal it has to others. It’s well written and the characters are unique and selfish and more real than other characters in some other classic novels. It’s dark and eerie - obviously, it’s a gothic novel - but not like other gothic novels.
I think what I liked about this book is that even though it isn’t very long and really only takes place in one place it feels much longer because it’s not simple. Wuthering Heights, also has some amazing quotes. For example: “Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same.” I’ve heard that quote more times than I can count but I had no clue that it came from this book.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë
4.0
I actually really liked this book. It had a bunch of different elements that classic novels only have one of. It’s a bit longer than most of the classic books that I’ve read. Jane is definitely plain but it’s hard not to like her. I even warmed up to Rochester, which I didn’t think that I would.
To be honest, I didn’t think that I would actually get around to reading Jane Eyre. I’ve had it on my bookshelf for a while and I thought that it would stay there but I’ve been on a classic books kick lately, and you simply can’t read classic books without including Jane Eyre.

Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, Stanley Weintraub
4.0
Despite it’s title, I didn’t have that great of expectations for this book. I was wrong, though. I adored this book. Although, it took a while get through it because the copy that I have has small print and my glasses are broken.
Anyways, the book is wonderful. The characters are original and timeless and the plot keeps you on your toes. The plot is winding, unpredictable and socking at some points. It’s very good and I enjoyed reading it.

Romanov by Nadine Brandes
4.0
This book is a very solid retelling of the Romanov Exile. If you’re looking for a book about history, you won’t find it here but it is one of those books that will peek your interest in it just enough so that you want to learn about the actual events.
You know how they tell you to never choose a book by its cover - well, I did. That plus I love Russian history. But I was not expecting the story that I read. It has a strong emphasis on family and it has quite a bit of magic in it. (I was expecting more and less than Was in the book). It can be devastating at times but ultimately it’s a good book that stands out from all the other retellings.
