Upstairs Girls: Prostitution in the American West by Michael Rutter
2.0
When I first saw this book I just had to have it. I have always been interested in women in history and women’s health, plus when I was a child I lived out West and my family would visit old mining towns that were considered ghost towns. There I would learn a little about prostitution in the Wild West, so of course this book peeked my interest.
After reading it, though, all I can say is that you shouldn’t waste your time on it. The information was interesting but the book was not. The writing is repetitive and choppy and so is some of the content.

Anne of Windy Poplars by L.M. Montgomery

I think the thing that I love about this series is that it’s written from Anne’s point of view. It makes the story much more colorful and can almost make you feel as if you were in the story. I think what I enjoyed about this book specifically was that Anne is finally a woman and it’s nice to read about a little kid that has grown so much.
I must admit that I did miss Diana, Marilla and the twins. Although little Elizabeth was a nice addition. But like I said I missed the group from Green Gables.

With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa by Eugene B. Sledge

I think that I’ve read maybe one World War II book before this so I don’t have much comparison, but in my opinion this biography/memoir is better put together than the other one. The other I read was Band of Brothers, which was good but after reading The Old Breed it feels like Band of Brothers was glorified. Which makes sense. It’s about companionship in a war zone, while The Old Breed is about an Idealist young man who joins the war to prove himself.
It’s gritty and real and honest. In his own words Eugene Sledge paints a picture of a terrifying war zone. And how it isn’t how he really thought it would be. How war changes a person, how it changed him.
I’m not the biggest fan of war biographies, I prefer fiction, but this was a very well written and well done book about the battles in Peleliu and Okinawa.

Anne's House of Dreams by L.M. Montgomery

I don’t actually have much to say about this one. Like always I love this series, this book included, but it just didn’t it home like the others did. Maybe because Anne is a wife now and before she was a rowdy student and and a fun loving curious college student and then a loving school teacher.
Its just so strange because Anne has all these ambitions and now it’s like they don’t matter now that she’s married. I’m drawing another parallel from Little Women. Jo was the same way pull of ambition and the sky wasn’t the limit but as soon as she fell in love and was married she settled. The writing is still consistent enough to make it believable in Anne’s case but I still miss old Anne.

I don’t have that much to say about this book. It was simple and classic and utterly charming. You can never get to old for ‘children book’ and I will stand by that until the end of time.
It was very precious but had some traditional views that I’m not the biggest fan of reading but it’s still a wonderful book. In fact, it reminded me a little of Anne of Green Gables.

Hero of Hacksaw Ridge: The Gripping True Story That Inspired The Movie by Booton Herndon
4.0
I bought this book almost straight after a I saw the movie Hacksaw Ridge starring Andrew Garfield. I’m not the biggest fan of war movies or war books but I will say this, I did enjoy both the book and movie. I thought the narrative that this book took was interesting and made me like it more. I liked this book not just for a war book but just because it was a good book overall.
The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne

I’m kind of torn on this book. The story itself is good but the writing was hard to keep up with. Like I said the story is good but I don’t know if that’s enough for me to recommend the book. It just didn’t hit right with me.
The Romanov Sisters: The Lost Lives of the Daughters of Nicholas and Alexandra by Helen Rappaport
5.0
The Romanov Sisters was a wonderful book. Unlike most books about history this one wasn’t an info dump and it was well paced. It was nice learning about the others sisters and the mother rather then just Anastasia or Rasputin.
I love reading about The Romanov family and this book is perfect for that. Usually when you hear about this family it’s always tragic. Don’t get me wrong, it is tragic, and I think the reason that it was so tragic was because the whole book was about how they were just a family and young girls. I definitely recommend you read this.

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Other Stories by Robert Louis Stevenson

This book is a bit different from what I expected. It’s a rather quick read but I think it’s worth it. Rather then other gothic novels, the book doesn’t really focus on the horrid things Hyde does but the duality of Jekyll and Hyde.
I wasn’t really expecting to come away from a gothic novel with a lesson. Which is, everyone has a dark side. That we are both sides of the same coin.

The Amityville Horror by Jay Anson

This book was bad but funny at the same time. The reason I think this book is bad is not because of the argument of if it’s non-fiction or fiction. For a book based on a paranormal incident you would expect more chilling scenes, but it has dry writing and it’s what I like to call an info dump.
Although the writing was dry almost every page had an exclamation point. It was almost to much and I just found it funny. But like I said the dry writing left me feeling distanced from the characters.
