 Netgalley sent me the audiobook and I must admit that, perhaps because of the narrator's hypnotic voice, I paid much more attention than I would have with the book. Even though I listened to it all in succession I picked up in my mind a whole series of tricks and strategies for being present in the moment, but living it all much more lightly.

Netgalley mi ha mandato l'audiolibro e devo ammettere che, forse per l'ipnotica voce della narratrice, ho prestato molta piú attenzione di quanto avrei fatto con il libro. Anche se l'ho ascoltato tutto di seguito ho raccolto nella mia mente tutta una serie di trucchi e strategie per essere presente nel momento, ma vivere il tutto con molta piú leggerezza.

 I can well imagine that for the time it was an extraordinary success because all the topos of the Gothic novel are there. In our day, however, it is clearly all excessive, a bit too much to be taken completely seriously unless placed in the proper historical and literary context. For my part, I had been wanting to read it for years so I enjoyed it quite a bit even though at times there were chapters in which the pace was so slowed by the “absurd” situations that my attention faltered.

Posso immaginare benissimo che per l'epoca fosse stato un successo straordinario perché ci sono tutti i topoi del romanzo gotico. Ai nostri giorni peró é chiaramente tutto eccessivo, un po' troppo per essere preso completamente sul serio se non inserito nel contesto storico e letterario appropriato. Per quando mi riguarda, erano anni che volevo leggerlo quindi me lo sono goduto parecchio anche se a volte ci sono stati dei capitoli nei quali il ritmo era talmente rallentato dalle situazioni "assurde" che la mia attenzione ha vacillato. 

 As in other books in this series, a reasoned questionnaire guides us to a response that shows our level of emotional maturity (in this case). For me it is a disturbingly superficial book and sits a small step above horoscopes, but surely it is because of my work as a psychologist/psychotherapist that some books that simplify things so dramatically give me hives.

Come anche in altri libri di questa serie, un questionario ragionato ci guida ad una risposta che ci mostra il nostro livello di maturità emotiva (in questo caso). Per me é un libro di una superficialità preoccupante e si situa un piccolo scalino sopra gli oroscopi, ma sicuramente é per via del mio lavoro come psicologa/psicoterapeuta, che alcuni libri che semplificano le cose in modo cosí drammatico mi danno l'orticaria.

 Particularly shocking in many respects, this meta-novel is read in one go and then maybe even reread, trying to figure out where we got into the Möbius strip. If you figure it out, let me know.

Particolarmente scioccante da molti punti di vista, questo metaromanzo si legge tutto d'un fiato e poi magari si rilegge pure, per cercare di capire dove siamo entrati nel nastro di Möbius. Se lo capite fatemelo sapere.

I continue to have so much fun reading this series that alternates between moments where it focuses on the children (Anya and her friends), and others where the focus is on the parents and their “relationship.” This issue is one of the latter, and I must admit that with the meddling of Yor's brother, we have reached some incredible moments of comedy.

Continuo a divertirmi tantissimo a leggere questa serie che alterna dei momenti in cui si concentra sui bambini (Anya ed i suoi amici), ad altri in cui il focus é sui genitori ed il loro "rapporto". Questo numero é uno di questi ultimi e devo ammettere che con le intromissioni del fratello di Yor, abbiamo raggiunto dei momenti di comicitá incredibili.

 Without any particular illusory spin and without slipping into the obvious, the book addresses forty of the most commonly used excuses for avoiding physical exercise in general. From the stresses of work to family commitments, the two authors address the psychological mechanisms underlying the excuses we make as very plausible, working more on acceptance than on countering them with force, which I think is much more useful. A self-help manual that could really get most of us moving, without deluding ourselves.

Senza particolari giri di parole e senza scivolare nell'ovvio, il libro indirizza quaranta tra le scuse piú utilizzate per evitare di fare movimento fisico in generale. Dallo stress del lavoro fino agli impegni familiari, le due autrici lavorano sui meccanismi psicologici sottostanti alle scuse che adduciamo come molto plausibili, lavorando piú sull'accettazione che sul contrastarle con la forza, il che ritengo sia molto piú utile. Un manuale di auto aiuto che potrebbe veramente portare la maggior parte di noi a muoversi, senza illuderci.

Although this time it is Ethan chasing Kaylin I admit it seemed more like the behavior of a stalker than a lover, but okay, de gustibus.
I probably would have been more interested in Hawk's story, but I don't think I will continue this series.

Anche se stavolta é Ethan che insegue Kaylin ammetto che mi é sembrato piú il comportamento di uno stalker rispetto a quello di un innamorato, ma ok, de gustibus.
Probabilmente mi sarebbe interessata di piú la storia di Hawk, ma non credo continuerò questa serie.

 In some ways this book seemed to me to be the “psychological” version of the literature book entitled “The seven basic plots.” The author identifies what are the narrative lines around which the stories we tell ourselves or how we decide to tell ourselves about the present (or the past or the future) unfold and the reasons why we do so and the implicit goals behind our stories. It is not an umbrella book by any means, but it is certainly very interesting.

Per certi versi questo libro mi é sembrato la versione "psicologica" del libro di letteratura che s'Intitola "The seven basic plots". L'autore identifica quali sono le linee narrative attorno alle quali si dipanano le storia che ci diciamo o come noi decidiamo di raccontarci il presente (o il passato o il futuro) e le ragioni per cui facciamo cosí e gli obiettivi impliciti che sottendono ai nostri racconti. Non é un libro da ombrellone assolutamente, ma certamente é molto interessante.

Somehow and probably also because this is her second collection of tales that are centered on white women who are currently in their 50s and belong to middle-class America, I felt like I had already read quite a few of these stories, with a few exceptions. A pity because it is from Prep that I appreciate this author (and no, I would have preferred to remember Lee Fiora without knowing anything else). But clearly this is my opinion as a white woman who is currently almost 52 years old and belongs to the middle class, European though, not American.

In qualche modo e probabilmente anche perché questa é la sua seconda raccolta di storie che sono centrate sulle donne bianche che hanno attualmente 50 anni ed appartengono alla borghesia americana, mi é sembrato di aver giá letto parecchie di questi racconti, tranne qualche eccezione. Un vero peccato perché é da Prep che apprezzo questa autrice (e no, avrei preferito ricordare Lee Fiora senza saperne altro). Ma chiaramente questa é la mia opinione di donna bianca che ha attualmente quasi 52 anni ed appartiene alla media borghesia, europea peró, non americana.

I personally feel that the author went a bit overboard with all the things our heroine had failed to say (confess) for one reason or another, none of which were valid in my opinion. So it was a bit of a forced story, or at least I read it that way, and rather than entertaining me, it made me anxious.

Personalmente ritengo che l'autrice abbia un po' esagerato con tutte le cose che la nostra eroina non era riuscita a dire (confessare) per una ragione o per un'altra, di cui nessuna valida secondo me. Quindi é stata una storia un po' forzata o almeno io l'ho letta cosí, e piú che divertirmi, mi ha fatto venire l'ansia.
