After having read and ranked “Don’t Cry for Me” as one of the best books for me last year, I was excited to know that I would be reading Isaac’s perspective… However, my expectations were very high.

The oppression he faced due to his sexual orientation and race was strongly present throughout the story, gradually unfolding through his therapy sessions. Then, at a certain point, everything took a turn toward the unreal.

If this were a movie, I would say the third act was the weakest part of the journey. The reflection he makes while grieving his father could be compared to the one I read from his father in the other book, but that one was much better.

Después de haber leído y catalogado “Don’t Cry for Me” como unos de los mejores libros el año pasado, sentí emoción al saber que leería la perspectiva de Isaac… Sin embargo, mis expectativas estaban muy altas.

La opresión por su orientación sexual y raza estuvieron bien presentes a través de la historia, poco a poco lo fue narrando y descubriendo con sus sesiones de terapia. Luego, en un momento dado, todo tomó un giro hacia lo irreal.

Si fuera una película, diría que el tercer acto fue lo más flojo del journey. La reflexión que hace a través de su duelo por su padre, podría compararse a la que llegué a leer por parte de su parte en el otro libro, pero aquella estuvo mucho mejor.

Una narrativa que podría parecer compleja, pero mientras más te adentras a la historia, más te percatas que todo conecta. La autora logra estar en el presente, ir al pasado, brincar al futuro y sus oraciones están tan bien redactadas que no te sientes perdido.

Desde un inicio, no sabes hacia dónde va la historia y ese es el propósito, simplemente, va contando la historia de diferentes personajes a lo largo de una extensa familia. Sin dejar de lado algunos personajes de las diferentes comunidades a las cuales pertenecen y cumplen con sus desarrollos, dándoles otros roles a los personajes principales.

Amé esta historia por cómo fue contada, brindando detalles que ponían a la mente imaginarse lo más simple como algo mágico y extravagante. Resaltando muchos temas presentes en la época, y algunos vigentes aún hoy en día. El personaje de Clara fue el más que quedará en mi corazón por siempre.

A narrative that might seem complex at first, but the deeper you dive into the story, the more you realize everything connects. The author masterfully moves through the present, past, and future, with sentences so well-crafted that you never feel lost.

From the very beginning, you don’t know where the story is heading—and that’s the point. It simply unfolds the lives of different characters across an extended family, while also including characters from various communities, developing their roles and giving new dimensions to the main characters.

I loved this story for how it was told, offering details that made even the simplest things feel magical and extravagant. It highlights many themes relevant to the time period, some of which remain significant today. The character of Clara is the one who will forever stay in my heart.

Una crónica rápida acerca del lamento de un hombre por guiarse a través de sus fantasías. El autor hace un buen trabajo describiendo su alrededor, yendo y viniendo del pasado, e intercambiando a quién le hablaba.

La historia, dentro de todo, es muy simple; y carece de ser interesante. El diálogo que tiene el personaje principal mediante su narrativa crea cuestionamientos en algunos momentos sobre la norma en la sociedad, pero hasta ahí.

No fue una mala novela, ni tampoco una que haya sido memorable. Entretiene y, al ser tan corta, la recomendaría para que lean lo estúpido que puede llegar a ser un hombre.

A quick chronicle about a man’s lament for being guided by his fantasies. The author does a good job describing his surroundings, going back and forth in time, and switching whom he is addressing.

Overall, the story is very simple and lacks intrigue. The main character’s dialogue throughout the narrative raises questions at times about societal norms, but that’s about it.

It wasn’t a bad novel, nor was it a memorable one. It is entertaining, and since it is so short, I would recommend it to see how foolish a man can be.

Me iba gustando el libro por el contexto histórico y cómo observaba la evolución de la ciencia en aspectos que hoy día consideramos normales. Pero mientras más pasaban los capítulos, menos quería seguir leyéndolo.

No sé cómo explicar lo desilusionado que vuelvo a estar con el autor. La longitud del libro se debe a lo extensa que quiere hacer la historia mediante oraciones que describen una y otra vez lo mismo. 

Todos los personajes, de cierta forma, se expresan iguales con metáforas y suspenso que se siente forzado. El misterio de la desaparición en un principio, termina siendo una ridiculez que sólo el autor encontró interesante alargar.

I was enjoying the book for its historical context and the way it observed the evolution of science in aspects that we now consider normal. But the more chapters I read, the less I wanted to continue.

I don’t know how to explain how disappointed I am once again with the author. The book’s length is due to how excessively drawn out the story becomes, with sentences that repeatedly describe the same thing.

All the characters, in a way, express themselves in the same manner, using metaphors and suspense that feel forced. The mystery of the disappearance, intriguing at first, ends up being a ridiculous plot point that only the author found interesting enough to drag out.

A simple story that, as you go through the chapters, you begin to understand how beautiful the message about grief becomes.

Not everything is explained chronologically; instead, you gradually uncover Helen’s story through different interactions she has.

There came a moment when even I cared about the mouse because I understood its significance to her and how they helped each other unintentionally.

Una historia sencilla que mientras vas pasando los capítulos vas comprendiendo lo lindo que llega a ser el mensaje en relación al duelo.

No todo se explica de manera cronológica, sino que vas descubriendo poco a poco la historia de Helen entre diferentes interacciones que tiene.

Llegó un momento que hasta a mí me importaba el ratón porque entendí el significado que tenía para ella y cómo uno ayudó al otro sin hacerlo de manera intencional.

No sabía nada de la historia de Roma ni de la vida de Julio César y, aún así, no me sentí perdido en ningún momento. Posteguillo hizo que pudiera posicionarme y conocer la terminología de la época sin ningún problema.

Me voló la cabeza que toda la política que ocurre años antes de Cristo, aún el día de hoy sigue siendo bastante parecida en lo que los partidos representan individualmente. De igual forma, cómo la justicia (aquella “legal”, no sangrienta) lleva a cabo un formato similar al que se ejerce hoy.

La historia dentro de la historia, haciendo recuerdo de grandes batallas que hubo en la época, Posteguillo logró engancharme con la acción y diálogos estratégicos entre ambos bandos para intentar obtener la victoria.

Estoy curioso por leer más adelante la segunda parte.

I didn’t know anything about the history of Rome or the life of Julius Caesar, and yet, I never felt lost at any point. Posteguillo made it easy for me to situate myself and understand the terminology of the era without any trouble.

It blew my mind that all the politics that took place years before Christ are still, to this day, quite similar in what the parties individually represent. Similarly, how justice (the “legal” and non-bloody kind) follows a format similar to what is practiced today.

The story within the story, recalling the great battles of the time, hooked me as Posteguillo masterfully wove action and strategic dialogues between both sides in their attempts to achieve victory.

I’m curious to read the second part later on.

Cuando terminé de leer este libro, lo primero que me vino a la mente fue “acabo de leer una telenovela mexicana, pero que incluye vampiros, de vez en cuando”. 

Fue una historia bastante entretenida por partes, como esas películas de Netflix que te atrapan con el trailer por la “acción”. Aunque, la respuesta al problema entre la pareja, constantemente se repetía. Mismos pensamientos, mismas “peleas” entre ellos, haciendo del libro monótono.

Unir el evento paranormal con la época histórica en donde Estados Unidos estaba invadiendo tierras de México fue espectacular… Lo lamentable es que fuera una sección tan corta.

When I finished reading this book, the first thing that came to mind was, “I just read a Mexican telenovela, but with vampires, every now and then.”

It was a fairly entertaining story at times, like those Netflix movies that hook you with the trailer because of the “action.” However, the resolution to the couple’s problem kept repeating itself. Same thoughts, same “arguments” between them, making the book monotonous.

Combining the paranormal event with the historical period when the United States was invading Mexican lands was spectacular… The unfortunate part was that it was such a brief section.

Reading a satire about the book industry made me question how many books I’ve read that have an “interesting” story about their publishing process that hasn’t come to light.

The characters were so well-developed that none of them were likable. I have no doubt that many authors behave similarly, driven by ambition and the demands of the industry itself.

Although I saw the ending coming, that wasn’t the main point of the story; rather, it was all the criticism woven throughout the chapters, and there were many truths in it.

Leer una sátira de la industria del libro me hizo cuestionar cuántos libros he leído que tienen una historia “interesante” sobre su proceso de publicación que no ha salido a la luz pública. 

Los personajes estuvieron tan bien elaborados que ninguno era soportable. No dudo que hayan muchos autores que se comporten de la misma forma por la ambición y también por la demanda de la industria en sí.

Aunque vi venir el final, ese no era el punto principal de la historia, sino toda la crítica que va narrando capítulo a capítulo y hubo muchas verdades.

Esta historia resultó ser algo totalmente opuesto a lo que esperaba según su sinopsis. Esa parte fue interesante, una amistad entre dos desconocidos debido a la necesidad y, por tal razón, cada cual debía ir conociendo la cultura del otro; eso estuvo interesante.

La densidad de la escritura entre astronomía, química y física por momentos no me sentía perdido tratando de imaginar sobre lo que hablaba, pero la mayoría del tiempo no sabía en donde estaba parado en el espacio. Sentí que aprendí algo sobre esos tópicos, y también sé que ya pronto lo olvidaré todo.

No sé porqué lo catalogan como “thriller”, no tiene nada de suspenso fuera de los primeros capítulos. La sinopsis lo vende muy bien como ese género, además del “sci-fi”. Haciéndolo bastante complejo para recomendar.

This story turned out to be completely different from what I expected based on its synopsis. That part was interesting—a friendship between two strangers out of necessity, and for that reason, each had to get to know the other’s culture. That was interesting.

The density of the writing, involving astronomy, chemistry, and physics, made me feel lost at times trying to imagine what it was talking about. Most of the time, I didn’t know where I was standing in space. I felt like I learned something about those topics, though I also know I’ll forget it all soon.

I don’t understand why it’s categorized as a “thriller.” It has no suspense aside from the first few chapters. The synopsis sells it well as that genre, along with “sci-fi,” making it quite difficult to recommend.

A pesar de que conocía un poco de la historia de Sylvia Plath por Rosa Montero, nunca había leído alguno de ella. Curioso por conocer cómo narraba su historia, me topé con sucesos aquí y allá sin un hilo que seguir hasta que comenzó a describir más y más su salud mental.

En el momento en que el libro llega a esa parte, comienzas a recolectar descripciones de los capítulos anteriores que fueron la acumulación de razones para su situación. Utilizando la prosa como su arma más fuerte, Sylvia habla sobre cómo la época junto a la sociedad jamás lograrían entender a una mujer como ella.

Admiro la valentía de narrar su historia de una forma tan vulnerable. Aún en el día de hoy, cuesta mucho de hablar de salud mental públicamente.

Although I knew a bit about Sylvia Plath’s story through Rosa Montero, I had never read anything by her. Curious to learn how she told her story, I came across events here and there without a clear thread to follow until she began to describe her mental health more and more.

When the book reaches that point, you start to gather descriptions from the earlier chapters that were the buildup to her situation. Using prose as her strongest weapon, Sylvia talks about how the era and society could never understand a woman like her.

I admire the courage it took to tell her story in such a vulnerable way. Even today, it is still very difficult to talk about mental health publicly.
