True Deceptions by Veronica Forand
4.0
I received an eARC of the book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Who doesn’t love themselves a hardened spy who softens with the love of a good strong woman who doesn’t take his crap?
This book started off high – like really high – I absolutely loved Simon and Cassie’s interactions – because Simon is a Class A Douchebag and Cassie is the sweet sweet desk jockey who is now going to be used as a pawn in a game that not even we know is being played.
You know why I liked Simon despite him being Class A Douchebag? First, the author was quick in explaining why he was quick in cutting Cassie off without even giving her the time of the day? And yes, while I understood those reasons, I wasn’t quick in forgiving him but it made reading him a lot easier. Second, once he was decided in giving Cassie his loyalty, he never faltered, never looked back, and never ever doubted it even when Cassie did. He was, once he got his ass in gear, ROCK SOLID and I absolutely adored him for it!
Cassie on the other hand, goes through the biggest transformation there I, and not even the bad kind. When you first meet her, she is this mousy, trembling, little girl who was way out of comfort league. But it took Simon’s gruff and assholish-ness to get her back up and grow a spine and she did it magnificently!
This story is complicated – there is a diverse amount of underlying plots going on that you don’t even get half the picture and that is when this book is in Dual POV (thankfully!) and yet you don’t get bored. Every single assessment, every single plot twist has its place and while at the start, I had my doubts on how it would all be resolved, it was and the sense of satisfaction that I received was off the Charts!
Now, you might all be wondering, why is this book still a 4 Star read for me? Because while intellectually I loved everything in this book, emotionally I just wasn’t able to connect it. I do know that it was a bad time in my life, when I read this book, so I am erring on the side of caution to realise that maybe when I do read it again (and I will), I will be able to emotionally invest in this book better!

Welcome Back, Jack! by Liam Sweeny

I remember the good ol' days where I used to love, absolutely love buckling down with a good mystery or a crime thriller. The ones that get your head working overtime and the ones that give you shivers when all you can see when you close your eyes is every single gruesome detail in technicolor!
I had forgotten how much I absolutely enjoyed those times and Welcome Back Jack reminded me of it - every single moment I was reading it!
We are introduced to Jack Taggart, a top detective in New Rhodes, a married man, he enjoys his life - even if it does take it's toll. We meet at a Crime Scene - a crime scene that is brutal as it is innovative (I could give you details but I am definitely not, because it will spoil all the fun!).
When Jack gives it all to the serial killer case that he is working on, it slowly dawns on to him, that the killer himself is playing a game, a game that has it's roots in the past, Jack's past to be precise. For Jack's parents were murdered brutally and their killer caught and executed. So how is it the killer from now and killer from the connected?
Liam Sweeny does a brilliant job of explaining the typical procedural drama without overwhelming the reader and he does with an aplomb that sticks with you throughout the book and even after finishing it.
We have a fast paced crime mystery, and characters that are so in depth that it was hard to get out of them! This kind of crime thriller takes you by your throat and makes you give up every single thing in your mind, because let's face it, catching the killer is much more important than sleeping, or eating and maybe even showering (or is it just me?).
Liam Sweny is an author who just made my auto-buy list and what that means is that I just stalked him on Goodreads and pretty much added every single book on my To-Read Shelf and will one-clicking his boks once self imposed book ban is over! :D

I rarely read paranormal adult romances – somehow for me shifters are much better off in a YA novel rather than an adult one. You may be thinking, then why am I requesting a paranormal book to review? Truth is, somehow this blurb struck a chord with me – maybe it’s the element of suspense in it or the element of heavy angst in it – I do remember I was in a mood for a heavy angsty read and therefore, my request for this book!
So let’s understand this – I liked this book! I did – but I wasn’t as overwhelmed by it as I wanted to – And I REALLY wanted to be! I wanted this book to tear me apart, break me down in a way that I would feel I never even wanted to be whole again.
First this book read as if it was a sequel or even a part of series which by a cursory glance to Goodreads proved me wrong (I think), because author talked about characters in a way that she expected that I would be acquainted by them (I wasn’t!).
Second, I really liked both Aimee and Jake, but individually. Together, they had a companion sort of relationship that turned into love so quickly that it gave me a head rush and I actually had to check whether I had missed a page or a whole chapter in the process.
The Saving Grace or Graces? The plot as well as the writing – both in different circumstances could have made this book one of the best books and could have catapulted into the paranormal genre. I loved how the author handled the characters – as I said, I really liked them individually – both characters being some that I would have rooted for (and I did!). The writing was fluid and had no breaks as far as I was concerned, it just lacked that “something” extra that could have endeared this book that’s all.

The Maddox Brothers by Ella Jade, Lacey Wolfe
4.0
I received an eARC of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Two brothers and the twists and turns they face in the journey to their HEA!
Hudson Maddox is controlled, focused and charming owner of a real estate company. Kennedy is the laid back, impulsive care free woman who is only now finding her foothold in the real estate industry. They are both the opposites of each other and thus, their attraction is something they both can’t understand.
It is easy to like Hudson – he is logical, methodological and intelligent. It wasn’t easy to like Kennedy – she was exactly what she was portrayed as – Daddy’s spoiled little princess, who doesn’t appreciate any advice given to her, even if she knows that the advice is sound, because she is hell bent upon proving herself to be competent – she just forgets that the path to success is not only littered with failures but also paved with humble attitude.
Thus, I never really understood their relationship – it, to me felt forced and the so called chemistry was unexplainable.
Therefore, the 2 star rating – only for Hudson Maddox!
Liam Maddox is a man-ho. No other words for it, no other explanation for it! He plays the field and after his brother, is the most eligible bachelor in town. The fact that he has his own construction business and that he works with his hands only makes him all the more appealing ;)
The reason why he is a man-ho? Chelsea, his high school sweetheart; The one who broke his heart and walked away. Chelsea has now come back to town, for good. She doesn’t really want to run into the boy whose heart she broke, but she really has no choice.
Now Liam’s book is one that I really liked – there is angst, there is explosive chemistry, and boy is there some unexplained circumstances. I really loved Liam and Chelsea together – they actually grew up during the years they broke up – and that maturity can be seen in the way they communicate with each other and it is brilliant!
Hence, the 4 star rating :D
I liked Liam Maddox’s story much more than I liked Hudson’s! But since I absolutely loved both the brothers – giving the book on the whole a 3.5 star rating :D

This is the third book in a series, and I felt lost at the start! I loved the idea that I gleaned from the blurb, but I have to say, I was lost!
And while it took me a while to get into the swing of things, I still loved reading about Jag and Alix – the fact that they could have been and yet lost their chance is a heart warming story – but sadly, it is too short and instant to make an impact! I did love the writing style of this author – and I do wish she had given this book a lot more attention than it got! It could have been an explosive book!
Understanding Jag’s attitude, made it a little bit easier to like him in such a short time, yes, but falling in love so soon and so fast even with the backdrop of their history – which I must say was explained quite nicely – still was a hard pill to swallow.
Ms. Cathryn is a really good writer, but she tends to rush into things – at least she did in this one – and the promise of an explosive plotline just fell absolutely flat!

Ninja At First Sight by Penny Reid
5.0
I received an eARC of the book via the wonderful Overload Penny Reid without any expectations of a review, and yet here I am!
Greg and Fiona are the mysterious married couple of the Knitting Group who have always fascinated me - I mean how could you not be? On one side, you have couples working towards their HEA but on the other, you have a couple already living their HEA and aren't we always curious as to what happens when that book ends? Do they live happily ever after? Or do they fight like animals and make up like bunnies?
But I digress... This is a novella showcasing little tidbits from the time before and during the big "Greg and Fiona Get Together" and I absolutely LOVED IT!!
I always had the sneaking suspicion that Greg will the most favorite hero of mine (no offence, Quinn and Alex!) and I am ecstatic that I was right!
Greg is that sweet intelligent, snarky British that you can't help but adore - he is the one man who will put you in your place with one biting remark that will either incense you or just basically make you wish that you knew vanishing spells for your pantie ;)
Fiona on the other hand, is the typical snarky Penny Reid heroine who basically becomes the epitome of what you actually want to be when you grow up - even if you are already 24 years old :D
I can't wait for [b:Happily Ever Ninja|22848621|Happily Ever Ninja (Knitting in the City, #5)|Penny Reid|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1442426755s/22848621.jpg|42410243] because it's a physical need to know that Greg and Fiona became the couple they did in my mind :D
"This is my chance to ruin you for anyone else.”
"By telling me all about how terrible you are?”
"By being honest. By playing no games. When I tell you that I’m a selfish bastard, I mean it. And when I tell you that you’re wonderful and amazing and stunning and definitely the most extraordinary woman I’ve ever met, you’ll know I mean that, too.”

Give it Up: He Sees You When You're Sleeping / Some Like It Hot / Playing Doctor by Lori Foster
4.0
I received an eARC of the book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Lori Foster is one of the first authors that I encountered when I started reading mainstream romance and hence, she has always been on my auto-buy list :D
I don’t really do novellas unless of course it is part of a series, but since it was Lori Foster , of course I had to give it go!
Some Like It Hot – This is the typical story of friends to lovers, except one of the protagonists is in a relationship and the other believes that love is unattainabl. This is the simplest stories of all three novellas in this anthology. It has no drama *well not much* and it is the easiest of all to get through – and that is why this was my least favourite. I liked the characters really, I did and the writing is pretty much perfect but it is the plot that flounders – and as much as I would like to, it just isn’t possible to like it as much as I would have liked to.
Playing Doctor - Now this was more to my liking – it had a depth to the character that just wasn’t present in the first novella, but it still lacked the flair I needed to enjoy it fully! Again, the writing was perfect, as well as the characters – but I would have loved it bit more of the intense communication that Lori Foster is well known for!
He Sees You When You're Sleeping – Now this! THIS IS WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT! This is the exact kind of romance that Foster is known for and honestly this was the best of the bunch! It had the snarky sarcastic dialogues that I love – a cocky playboy hero and the sort of love that simply warms your heart! Best of the bunch, this novella is the only reason why this anthology got a 4 Star rating!

Say You're Mine by Diane Alberts
4.0
I received an eARC of the book in exchange for an honest review.
The blurb makes this book sound really interesting – especially considering that this is a best friend to lovers kind of romance.
And I actually liked this – Steven and Lauren’s chemistry literally jumps off to you right from the first page, even if they acted like they didn’t have a scorching attraction between them :P
Steven is a man whore – not just by choice, but also because he believes that he isn’t cut out for relationships. Lauren is his best friend and the only long term “relationship” he has had in his whole life – so he keeps his distance, even if it means that he loathes seeing her with anyone else.
Lauren on the other hand, has been in love with Steven for as long s she can remember – but knowing his dereliction for relationships, she struggles to be content with her friendship with him.
Most of the best friends to lovers stories are clichés – because let’s face it, there aren’t a whole lot of ways for that kind of relationship to go through for HEA – but what makes a difference is the plot and the characters and that is exactly why this romance was something that I actually liked!
Both Steven and Lauren are strong characters individually – with both of them understanding where and how they went wrong and copping up to that – but it’s the combination of their personalities and the plot itself that makes the winning combination for this book and puts this author on my list of “Authors I would love to check out” *pun totally intended*

I received an eARC of the Book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
The blurb had me really excited for this book - though I do tend to shy away from anything celebrity related - mostly because I never think I will be able to connect to the characters and that is exactly what happened with this book!
This is the second book in the series, and while it can be read as standalone, I would have preferred to read the first book before reading this one - because the author plunges us into a story wit characters that have already been introduced, so it took a while to get used to to the world.
Addi, the heroine, is a hard character to like, not because she is unlikable, but because she is really really impulsive and flighty - and never really thinks of the consequences of her decisions on others.
Roque has a point to prove - and is trying really hard to prove it. I loved his character, he is staedfast, gruff and yet very loyal to people he cares about and Addi soon beomes one of them, if not the first on that list.
Another reason why I couldn't like Addi - she knew with Roque having told her, indirectly the consequences of her actions yet instead of actually communicating her problems, she went ahead and tried to have her cake and eat it too! Never a successful combination.
I liked the writing style though - funny when required and angsty when desired - the writing was the foundation yet it was one half of the structure that actually made the story wobble this time.
