I mean obviously this is one of my favorites in this series. I don’t think I reread this one as much as the others, but I’m actually kind of glad about that because there were elements I had forgotten about that I got to almost experience again for the first time.
Amun and Haidee are a dedicated couple to each other almost from the beginning. It’s almost insta-love/lust, but it feels different from the usual types. This is done very tastefully.
We also get to see the set-up for a couple of other stories, which is an element I kind of miss from Gena’s newer works. It really helps build the anticipation and the suspense.

~Has spoilers from previous books and this novel!~
In this seventh installment of Gena Showalter's Lords of the Underworld series; we pick up with Amun, keeper of the demon Secrets after in the last novel he and others traveled to Hell to rescue Legion and Amun absorbed hundreds of demons--their thoughts, their urges. Blood lust and pain, every evil deed they had ever committed open to him and driving him insane and putting everyone he loves in danger.
At first he thinks to end himself but then he meets Haidee. A Hunter, she was raised to hate demons but she can't seem to hate Amun and to be together they must face a perilous danger in order to rid Amun from the demons inside of him.
It actually took me a while to get pick this one up because the other novels in the series was so good and I didn't know if this one would live up to my expectations especially since I knew very little about Amun and nothing good about Haidee.
But I have to say it did live up to my expectations and I loved learning more about Amun and Haidee, loved seeing them fight together and how their relationship formed though the hardships. How they managed to except the past and look to the preset and future.
Another thing I really enjoyed about this novel is something that I like about all the authors books about this series so far; that hint of what is to come in future books! I can not wait to get my hands on The Darkest Surrender!!
I would definitely recommend this novel to anyone who has read the ones before and the series to anyone who is looking for a great paranormal read.

I'd give this 3 and a half stars rather than four. I liked it, although it's not my favourite of the series.
But I really hate how everything is between Amun and Strider at the end of the book. I also feel like Haidee was absolved so easily, even though rationally I also understood her reasoning etc.
I think I just love Strider so I get annoyed when he's mistreated lol

MoTo be honest I was NOT looking forward to Amun. I'm glad that this book delivered everything I needed and then some. Amun holds the demon Secrets and in turn has chosen not to speak as to not release everything the demon in him learns from the people around him. My favorite scene with him prior to this was in the woods outside the Castle with Olivia and Aeron. He said he went there because it was beautiful and peaceful especially for his demon.
Then he agrees to go to Hell with Aeron to save Legion. He must use his demon to find her.. but in turn takes in thousands of demons which in turn torment his mind.
Strider finds Haidee while out hunting and brings the Hunter back to the castle bc he realizes she's the Bait that killed Baden. While in the room next to Amun his demon calls to her and she gets to him thinking it's her Hunter bf Micah. Not Amun.. so she comforts him.
Quickly realizing the connection is different they start having some fun when Strider burst in.. takes her to the dungeon instead and fights Amun. He tells her it's not Micah.. but the rest of the Lords realize she can help him defeat the demons in his head. So the angel Zacharel sends them to Hell where he is told to expunge them.
They eventually fall in love and realize soo much about her past. She's reanimated after every death due to being made by the goddess Themis and also has a piece of the demon Hate. Who comes for her later and she dies when he takes his entire demon and expels it. We learn that Zacharel has the demon Love in a bottle by his bed and gives some of it to Haidee so she is reborn as the demon Love.
This book is about forgiveness and unconditional love. After everything that has happened to both of them, their fates entwined since the beginning. They learn to love and release all the hate and resentment. They try to ignore their connection at first and lose quickly. Their chemistry is amazing. They just can't help it. If Haidee is Ice, Amun is Fire.. they complete each other.
The scene at the end after she died and Amun finally spoke to his friends to tell them about her and fought with Strider. Wow.
And the side stories.. Strider was attrac6to Haidee but knew she was the enemy so resisted on their trip to the castle. When he sees how attached Amun is.. he leaves to try and rid himself of his need for her. Only to be wrangled up with Kaia in a set of confusing and hilarious scenes in Texas! The end where Kaia interrupted Amun and Haidee and threatened him because of what he did makes me excited for the next book! And honestly I want more about the Horseman!

Skimmed a better portion of this book. It was pretty boring. Did enjoy the sub plot of Srider and Kaia of course.

This may be my favorite so far and I was actually scared to read it. I didn’t think there was any way I was going to like Haidee, but once again Gena shows what a marvelous author she is.

I struggled with this, and it has absolutely nothing to do with the story. It was simply from the fact that it took me so long to read. I am so used to having all day to read cause I was unemployed, but now working in marketing for a publishing company I always feel so busy. I get how at night and still finish up some emails. Then I have like two hours until I need to get some sleep...so I tried to divide that time between reading and my puppy. So instead of taking the usually 2 days to read this lovely book, it took me a week. Ok so enough about me...
First let me say, I absolutely love Gena Showalter and the Lords of the Underworld series. It was one of the first paranormal series that I ever read, and I love all the Lords for their own unique personalities. With that being said, I love Amun the most. I have been waiting for his story for what seems like forever.
In all the previous books Amun comes off as very quiet and kinda shy, but above all he is loyal. He loves his friends more than everything else, and would do anything for them. I think it was this loyalty and his vulnerability that made him my favorite.
The Darkest Secret only made me love him more. Cause underneath all that quietness is a strong man who is willing to die for the ones he love. And who does he end up falling in love with? A hunter. You would think it impossible for a reader to suddenly support or care about a woman who has been so instrumental in the Hunters persuit of the Lords. But Gena slowly made me start to care for Haidee, and by the end of story I was just as big of a fan of Haidee's as I was of Amun.

Something else that I like about this book is that you got to know the Keeper of Defeat, Strider, much more. I have never really cared about him but Gena did a wonderful job of showing us more sides to Strider, and now I can't wait for his turn to fall in love...and Kaia seems like she is going to be a handful.

I like this series a lot, but this one is not QUITE as good as some of the others. The first chapter or two seemed kind of rocky, when usually I can just pick them up and get caught up in the story. I think that Showalter couldn't make up her mind whether to write the Strider book or the Amun book. She's obviously setting up the Strider book, he gets almost as much time as the main characters. At first I thought we might get a rather unique situation, where 2 of the Lords were fighting over a mate, but then it slipped back into standard "boy and girl go on an adventure together and fall in lust then love." I wish we had seen more of the other Lords. I am looking forward to Strider, William, and Paris' books, because I think this one might have just been filler to set up those stories. It is nice to see a black romantic hero (I don't think I have EVER read a romance novel with one).
