The Paying Guests by Sarah Waters
probs my least favorite sarah waters so far. it did Not need to be that long.. i also thought the prose was kinda dumb at parts. i definitely prefer her works w first person wayy more as well lol
maybe the book will grow on me; i think the comparisons made between the domestic and carceral spaces/public spaces in general were quite interesting but overall it still felt kinda trite and like i was being beaten over the head with it so idrk.

The House You Pass on the Way by Jacqueline Woodson
lovely writing. i think due to my repressed childhood lesbianism i completely forgot that i had already read this as a kid. strange ending
Otherside Picnic (Manga) 02 by Iori Miyazawa, shirakaba
weirdly imperialist but fun if you don't think about it too hard
Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen
i think this is definitely my least favorite austen HAHA. i think u can also tell that this is her first work. at the very least, it's interesting to see the emergence of some austen archetypes. i dunno maybe i need to think about it more though.
i feel like i appreciated emma's comedy and pride and prejudice's shenanigans more... i think those are the austen works that i was thinking about most while reading

usually, i write a blurb about what i took away from a book but it's one am and i usually do so after reading a bit more about it, so i won't now. this was incredible, though. i definitely will reread sometime. at the moment i'm most intrigued by the compsons as a family that's obsessed with this (dead) southern ideal. i say dead because i'm wondering if it'd be beneficial to read this nostalgia as a sort of haunting. would be interesting esp. when it comes to benjy's section, but is it necessary? atm i'm unsure. i also need to think more about the family's anxieties around female sexuality; in some ways, the relationship between jason and (younger) quentin reminded me of the relationship between heathcliff and (younger) cathy. this is all quite simplistic but also it's one forty and my head hurts and as mentioned i haven't read much about this yet OR had a chance to gather my thoughts. my first favorite of this year and it's one i'll be thinking about for a long time for sure :-)
i took off .25 because of the appendix. is that mean?

White Tears / Brown Scars: How White Feminism Betrays Women of Color by Ruby Hamad
Did not finish book. Stopped at 34%.

i absolutely despise dnfing books especially when they're nonfiction but i could not take this. i should have known that i was not the target audience of this book when the white fragility author was cited in the introduction itself. i did not know that this was one of those white people self help books.
okay, so, my issues. i thought the arguments the authors made were extremely simplistic or off base. this was also like far too libfem for my taste. also WHY was ostensibly being used so often! so many things.
i just... i really wanted to like this! i gritted my teeth and tried to read this for four hours and kept getting annoyed and distracted by the structure or the writing or the general issues i mentioned previously... i'm genuinely upset!

idk i also feel like i knew about most of the stuff id read so far but i guess that this is like, something white people or people that are not that well versed in feminist theory/history might enjoy? just not my thing at ALL. zero offense to anyone who enjoyed this or the author lol

first read of 2023 (although i started it on the 31st) :-) enjoyed some stories a lot, was lukewarm on others. i think my favorites in no particular order are oranges, g, office hours, and peking duck. i think i'll find myself thinking about tomorrow the most. have been thinking about the politics of ma's work lately, which i am ambivalent about. nevertheless, good read.
