The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner

4.75

usually, i write a blurb about what i took away from a book but it's one am and i usually do so after reading a bit more about it, so i won't now. this was incredible, though. i definitely will reread sometime. at the moment i'm most intrigued by the compsons as a family that's obsessed with this (dead) southern ideal. i say dead because i'm wondering if it'd be beneficial to read this nostalgia as a sort of haunting. would be interesting esp. when it comes to benjy's section, but is it necessary? atm i'm unsure. i also need to think more about the family's anxieties around female sexuality; in some ways, the relationship between jason and (younger) quentin reminded me of the relationship between heathcliff and (younger) cathy. this is all quite simplistic but also it's one forty and my head hurts and as mentioned i haven't read much about this yet OR had a chance to gather my thoughts. my first favorite of this year and it's one i'll be thinking about for a long time for sure :-)

i took off .25 because of the appendix. is that mean?
