Umm..it was cool. I loved the relationship between the siblings and how nostalgic it made me for my hometown. So much of the sister’s abilities were vague and her inability to act on the oppression she witnessed frustrated me deeply…..but maybe that was the point. I don’t know.

It is a book I’d use in my English class to teach though.

This book was fantastic. Surprisingly, I read began reading it without any knowledge of the blurb. I chose this book because all of black bookstagram backed this book. It did not disappoint. I loved the combination of root magic and the…other magic in the story. I am TEAM Sel all the way…. And “shipping” characters is not something I do often. This book is a must read, especially for those like me who grew up loving every version of Arthurian retellings.

I loved this book becasue of its ability to manifest a visceral reaction to a character and a relationship. I wish to kill Doro a thousand times over. Doro’s fucked up eugenics experiment and the motivation for it makes me want to slice him from his asshole to his mouth. Doro and Anyanwu’s interactions pissed me off to the high heavens but I was SOOOOOOO invested.

The theme topics and questions presented were phenomenal. Dominance and Submission. Creation and Destruction: can these two constructs live in harmony? What is taboo, unconditional love, freedom, loneliness, etc. when you are immortal?

This book comes with SERIOUS trigger warning: manipulation, emotional/verbal abuse, incest, attempted rape, death, and a couple more…just expect your typical Butler mindfuck.

I truly enjoyed this graphic novel. I was hella confused for parts of it but it came together enough to convince me to buy vol. 2. The diversity in characters is top notch.
