Dracula the Undead by Freda Warrington
4.0
I was skeptical about reading a sequel to Dracula. After reading it I didn't believe it needed one after all. Since Freda Warrington has become my favorite author I, of course, gave the book a shot. As with like the rest of her work I was not disappointed. She brought out the romance that is rumored to be in Bram's Dracula with wonderful creative flow. I was very happy that they style was nearly like Bram's and still her own was able to shine through. I thought the story was creative and unique and even enjoyed the tension in Jonathan and Mina's relationship (stories like that usually drive me insane and stress me out but Freda pulled everything off nicely).
The ending well done! I absolutely loved how we were able to see the darker side of Scholomance and the imagery she managed was beautiful.
I highly recommend this book IF you must read a sequel to what is now one of my beloved novels, Dracula.

To date this is the best Christian novel I have ever read. I am very picky when it comes to books and this did not disappoint. I would say, that even if you're not interested in Christian beliefs, perhaps you don't even have them, it is worth a read. There is no getting around them though as God is heavily pronounced so keep that in mind. This had multiple POV but I wasn't deterred at all. The romance is fitting for the era and beautifully written.
I noticed a lot of people said this was a slow read but I could hardly put it down. By the end I was in tears and felt so utterly heartbroken. (Don't worry there are two more books!) It is one of the few books that moved me to feel while reading and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves a beautiful, elaborate story. Again, this is a Christian book but it has everything you could possibly want from the Roman era, with violence, gore, romance, and more.
As a series this is one of my favorites and will always have a home on my book shelf. I have not been able to bring myself to read it again though simply because it moves me so much I don't feel like crying haha The first and third are deifently my favorites as I was not as interested in following the characters in the second.

As Sure as the Dawn by Francine Rivers

I enjoyed this story but I was not as interested in following the characters as I was the first. I will leave a larger review when I have more time.
'Salem's Lot by Stephen King

This is probably the most unpopular opinion on here but I didn't like it. I felt this story was slow to start and unfortunately, I am not a huge fan of King's writing style. The story was dynamic, I will give it that but I couldn't connect with any of the characters. Everyone raved about how scary and horrifying this book was but I felt it lacked in that department entirely. Truthfully, I wouldn't recommend it and it has lost a home on my book shelf as I doubt I will ever read it again and is on its way to a new owner.
Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey

I'll have to come back and update this review later. For now I will just say, wow! I was incredibly skeptical about this book at first. I bought the trilogy from my aunt's used bookstore because it seemed interesting. I looked up the title and author, saw all of the great reviews, and figured, oh why not. These books have sat on my shelf for a year and every time I looked at them I wondered why I even bothered to purchase them because it didn't capture my attention any more the way it did everyone else.
I read this book in five sittings. I might have finished sooner, but I've been living a very busy and stressful life. Carey truly has an amazing way with words and an incredible imagination. I can only hope my writing will ever be half as good as hers.
Phedre is a heroine I never expected. It is true I didn't quite enjoy her character at first, but after 200 pages I loved her. Her love for Delauny, Joscelin, and all of her friends is a truly beautiful thing. Her wit and wisdom was incredibly well-written.
As I said, I'll come back and edit this review. It is 900 pages and I have quite a lot to say.
Pick it up and read it! You won't be disappointed. I can't wait to start on Kushiel's Chosen!

Dracula by Bram Stoker

I hate that it has taken me so incredibly long to read this book. Beam is incredible and I was wrapped up every moment- hung to every single word. I did listen to this on audio for the most part while I worked through a separate book but finished read the physical copy at the end. I was happy with the ending it was left open ended but summed everything up nicely. I saw some people were disappointed with the way it “dragged” but I was content. This is defiantly going on my favorite shelf and I will be re-reading it in the future and highly recommend this even if you’re not a vampire lover but perhaps a lover of excellent literature and classics. His fluidity was flawless and it was a truly wonderful story.
Don’t be deiceiced though this is not a love story. I honestly don’t know where people get that from but there is no romance between Mina and Dracula and the first half of the story is centered around Jonathan and and then “poor Lucy”.
I’m rambling, sorry not sorry, but I enjoyed all of the characters.

Till We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis

I started reading this book taking it for what it was- the story of Psyche and Cupid retold from Orual's point of view. I had read reviews of it prior but wanted to remained unbiased as I read it.
It is interesting to look at this story through Christian eyes. I myself am a Christian but I thought it was such a curious story to use to talk about Christ. It was truly beautiful but it wasn't until the very end that I felt deeply overwhelmed. Orual's change was heartbreaking (and beautiful) and something I think we have all felt at one time or another when facing God or our beliefs. Though this story hasn't moved me as other reads it is profound and unique and I must agree is one of Lewis' best work. (I cannot say that it is THE best as I haven't read everything yet.)
If you're looking for a story strictly about Cupid and Psyche you will not find it. They are mentioned in passing and you should keep that in mind if you are looking to see more of them.
