Caveat: I’ve never read caraval or any of that series. I went into this completely blind.

I was really excited for this. It sounded enthralling and intoxicating. And what I got was… boring and a let down. Evangeline and Jacks never really scratched my itch because at times, both were annoying and insufferable.

While this was an easy read, I found myself being bored most of the time. A book around the gates is refreshing and fun and new but this was not those things.

While I own the second book, I will not be reading it. My time with Evangeline and Jacks ends here and that’s ok.

Currently writing this review with many years leaving my face. This is a story about grief, trauma, loss, race, love, and growth.

This book fully surprised me with what happened, how heavy it would be (in a good way), how much I would love these characters, how much I wanted to fight for them, and how hard this story would hit me.

More people need to read this book. Jas Hammonds did a beautiful and seemingly impossible job weaving a heavy story with that of one about love. I don’t think this story could have been told any better.

This is basically Love and Other words in a different font.

There was one part that i found really touching, where
Charlie tells Percy about his mom saying he needed to call her when she dies because Sam will need her. But outside of that, this was fine. But I’ve also read this same story before.

3.5

I’ve never read one of this author’s books before and I picked this up on a whim. I’m glad I did! It was quick, thrilling and had me guessing until the end.

It’s not the greatest thriller I’ve read but it was engaging enough that I read it basically in one sitting.

Plus the very last line of the book gave me chills down my spine.

The reason I gave this 3.5 - some aspects felt very reminiscent of other YA thriller books that have come out over the last few years. While I didn’t guess who did it, it also wasn’t shocking. But overall, a fun read!

I just didn’t connect with it. It read a little too young for me

I thoroughly LOVED Girls of Paper and Fire and I thoroughly found the sequel just okay.

I still like also as a main character but this book was (1) highly predictable (2) slow and (3) felt like it was just fluff? I think a lot of the main points could have been put into the third book and this would have been better as a duology. Even after the cliffhanger of this book I’m really debating reading the third book. I think I can already guess the major plot points of it which makes it less enticing.

I want to see more from Natasha Ngan, I think she’s talented and I like the stories and ideas, but this book was just so-so and didn’t add a lot to this world for me.
