IT | Questo libro mi ha accompagnata per 6 mesi. È stato il mio rifugio tutte le volte che cercavo una lettura rilassante, un fantasy vecchio stile, un piccolo (si fa per dire, visto che consta di 633 pagine) conforto. Il materiale di partenza - la fiaba dei cigni selvatici - viene trattato con intelligenza e maestria e l'autrice ne ha colto gli spunti senza tradire le origini della storia e al tempo stesso senza restare bloccata nella struttura rigida e un po' sterile della fiaba. Ha dei punti che noi lettorə del 2024 sicuramente interpretiamo come difetti (la protagonista soffre un po' della sindrome del "I'm not like the other girls", il cattivo è il classico megalomane amante dei monologhi, la storia d'amore si sgama subito, l'agency dei personaggi femminili lascia un po' a desiderare) , ma i tòpoi un po’ datati non ne intaccano comunque la bellezza, a parer mio. L'ho amato.

The source material - the fairy tale of the six wild swans - is treated with intelligence and mastery and the author has grasped the ideas without betraying the origins of the story and at the same time without remaining stuck in the rigid and somewhat sterile structure of the fairy tale. It has points that we readers of 2024 certainly interpret as flaws(the protagonist suffers a bit from the "I'm not like the other girls" syndrome, the villain is the classic megalomaniac who loves monologues, the love story is immediately understood, the female characters lack a little agency) , but the slightly dated tòpoi still don't affect its beauty, in my opinion. I loved it.

IT | Ho avuto, leggendo questo fumetto, la sensazione di sbirciare dalla serratura una conversazione intima in cui il non detto ha più peso delle parole - poche - che vengono pronunciate. Due vite (e poi quattro) in cui le speranze, le illusioni e i desideri vengono tutti disattesi e non sembra esserci spazio per riprendere le fila di ciò che si crede di aver perso. Doloroso.

IT | ODE A JUNO DAWSON! Finalmente un libro che parla di stregoneria senza schiacciare tutta la narrazione sulla caccia alle streghe, il puritanesimo, il disagio esistenziale, la chiesa eccetera eccetera. Finalmente un libro in cui le streghe sono le assolute protagoniste e rivendicano fieramente il loro essere streghe. Queste streghe moderne sono personaggə con lə quali è facile empatizzare perché la loro identità non si esaurisce nei loro poteri, sono persone complesse e profonde, ognunə con le proprie peculiarità, che si scontrano contro problemi molto umani nei quali tuttə possiamo in qualche modo riconoscerci. Nella mia modesta opinione all'inizio il libro fatica un po' a carburare, ma una volta superata la metà non si riesce a metterlo giù.
L'unica cosa che ho trovato deludente è stato l'uso del rogo come metodo di esecuzione. Credo che proprio per la loro storia le streghe dovrebbero categoricamente rifiutarsi di usare un metodo così violento e così strettamente legato alla loro repressione. È il secondo libro che leggo in cui il rogo viene usato in questo modo e non mi do pace, purtroppo questo dettaglio è valso una stella in meno.

These modern witches are easy to empathize with because their identity is not limited to their powers, they are complex and profound people, each with their own peculiarities, who collide with very human problems in which we can all in some way recognize ourselves. In my humble opinion, the book struggles a bit at the beginning, but once you get past the halfway point you can't put it down.
The only thing I found disappointing is the use of burning at the stake as the method of execution. I believe that precisely because of their history, witches should categorically refuse to use such a violent method so closely linked to their repression. It's the second book I've read in which the stake is used in this way and I hate it. This is basically the reason why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5.

IT | Questo libro ha un problema: l’edizione. 10 euro per 66 pagine significa voler spremere il successo di Jackson per far soldi facili. I 4 racconti, che sono pur belli, a tratti geniali (ok, è Shirley Jackson, ce lo aspettavamo), ti lasciano solo col desiderio di averne di più. Peccato.
