O Primeiro Amor by Ivan Turguéniev
wow this book is o l d, the references to contemporary russian writers of the time are way out of my interest bubble unfortunately. also, you really can't convince the reader that teenagers had thoughts as complex as vladimir's

There is a sweetness in being the sole source, the autocratic and irresponsible cause of the greatest joy and profoundest pain to another.

Woman at Point Zero by Nawal El Saadawi
nawal el saadawi is an absolute tank! loved learning about her life and i'm glad to hold firdaus' story with me now, although i do believe this book would've been a more solid nonfiction piece
and can we just stop with forewords that spoil the plot of the book... it is just so unnecessary

All women are victims of deception. Men impose deception on women and punish them for being deceived, force them down to the lowest level and punish them for falling so low, bind them in marriage and then chastise them with menial service for life, or insults, or blows.

Chegou a nossa hora, Matilde.
Vamos.
& This Is How to Stay Alive by Shingai Njeri Kagunda
so much depth packed in so little pages! i enjoyed this exploration of grief, trauma and the struggle of feeling disconnected from family while trying to connect with your own identity. it's so important to choose to be kind whenever you can, that's what really resonated with me while reading this piece. that being said, i was definitely confused by the narrators halfway through, the fantasy element didn't completely grab me either and i wish there was a translation of the swahili passages

And somewhere on a different side of the city the what is is a boy, is a blessing, a blessing who is moving and breathing and feeling and loving and punching and suffocating and choosing and chasing after what it means to stay alive.

well, that ending was unexpected
what a heartwrenching depiction of dementia. i love the "deliberately unfinished" art style, love how many pages are just visuals for the reader to sit with. considering clémence's age, it felt like some of her decisions were not in her grandmother's best interest, although i suppose that's part of the panic of attempting to provide a happy memory to someone you're bound to lose

Strike Your Heart by Amélie Nothomb
what was that ending? books like this are a stark reminder of the importance of a satisfying close to a story — good or bad, at least make it satisfying, especially if the story is short. i did enjoy this little exploration of one of the most intricate bonds in the world (the mother/daughter relationship), the narrative maintained a solid fast pace too but i can't say i'd reread this or even recommend it

When she saw the goddess kissing the little boy, leaving her out, Diane managed to move beyond her pain and remember that some day she would become Queen, not out of personal ambition, but in order to hand the crown to her mother and console her for everything in her life that seemed so constricting.

i hate to be that guy but this really was a bit too long... that being said, i loved the setting and the themes tackled in this play, especially the idea that we often can't help but filter our lives through the lens of movies and media in general, rather than having authentic independent experiences. it is expertly written realism and i would argue it falls under the rare category of "plays better read than performed"

They did nothing—other than subjecting us to complete nothingness. For, as is well known, nothing on earth puts more pressure on the human mind than nothing.
We are happy when people/things conform and unhappy when they don't. People and events don't disappoint us, our models of reality do. It is my model of reality that determines my happiness or disappointments.
i know nearly 0 about chess, thankfully the actual game itself is only a small part of this short book. that being said, the overall idea of the story is hopeful but also seems silly? maybe i'm too much of a skeptic

And the so-called real world will not discourage you from operating on your default settings, because the so-called real world of men and money and power hums merrily along in a pool of fear and anger and frustration and craving and worship of self.
It is about the real value of a real education, which has almost nothing to do with knowledge, and everything to do with simple awareness; awareness of what is so real and essential, so hidden in plain sight all around us, all the time, that we have to keep reminding ourselves over and over:
“This is water.”
“This is water.”
