I had no idea this book was a part of a series, so I can only review it as a stand-alone.
It was difficult for me to read mostly due to the personality of the narrator. He came off as an uncharming, smarmy know-it-all. The characterizations of the suspects and investigators were basic and empty, which lessened my motivation to continue the novel. I assume the previous books build up the investigators and their relationships with each other, but without that as reference they feel rather flat. The mystery was interesting in itself, but I found lacking interest in the outcome of the investigation besides the reveal of who did it and how (I didn't care for the why). Multiple times, I found myself skimming over passages both long and short just to bypass the narrator's rambling-- which is something I usually enjoy-- and back to the stepping stones of the mystery.

I was sucked into this one from the beginning. If life hadn’t been so life-y, I probably would’ve finished it in a sitting or two.

The more Horowitz writes in this series, the more fleshed out Hawthorne and semi-fictional Horowitz and their relationship become, and I think that’s a large part of why this is my favorite of the four. Well. That and the plot.

As always, likable characters, an interesting and rather unique premise, and a slow gathering and revealing of information that keeps you hooked and invested until the very end. I hope there’s a 5th book in the works!

This was my favorite Hawthorne/Horowitz yet - would have been 4 stars if not for the weird self insert political correctness dialectics that Horowitz INSISTS on putting in these books. The setting is fun, the characters really pop off the page, and yes - I did guess the solution, but was surprised at one or two of the finer details.
