I didn't expect to like this book as much as I did. A definite twist on the dystopia of corruption and superpowers. Clever concepts with a slew of pieces that align just right. Quite the thought-provoking conundrum with Mac's power over/with Shane. And funny jokes (flushing toilet super power!).
Usually when I read a book with more than 1 or 2 main characters I have a hard time truly following all of their story lines, let alone really caring what happens to all of even just most of them.
But it's 2:40 AM, and I am completely sucked into the maelstrom that is the end of this book!
My only complaint/request - the next books in this series better do more satisfactory jobs of telling/wrapping up Elliot/Stephen and Joe/Anna's stories...

Glad she is having fun experimenting with different sub-genres (can't wait for SEALS In Space, book 1...), but the sci-fi future stuff got in the way of her characters.

A typical Brockmann romantic suspense tale with a paranormal twist -- which is to say it's a fine thing to take along to the beach: some adrenaline, some requisite happy ending, but nothing too challenging. In fact, you may feel that you've read it all before (curious, isn't it, that her tales all have THREE intertwining romances?). I think the new twist is kind of clever: in some dreary unnamed future -- marked largely by economic troubles and lots of out-of-work folks -- good scientists research the abilities of human "greater-than's" who are able to access more innate brain-power than most of us. Makes for lots of good heroics. There are evil people manufacturing an addictive drug called Destiny as well, and a Navy SEAL (of course), and another same-sex romance in the mix, which I kind of like and which makes Brockmann more forward-thinking than some other writers.
There's still the endless internal analyzing ("He can't really love me, can he?") for which her characters are known, and this one's darker than her earlier books (the bad guys are really bad) but I'd recommend it as a beach read any day.

This book was a real surprise. I did not expect it to be this good, but it REALLY is! It's a really interesting concept, well thought-out and well executed, which is rare. It's quirky and even goofy at times, but it's thoroughly lovable. The characters feel three-dimensional and well-conceived--I really did come to care about each of them. As you can see, I all but inhaled it, because the plot was very compelling, as were the character arcs.
I am eagerly anticipating a sequel!

I wasn't sure what to make of this book when I first started it, but I ended up enjoying it quite a bit. If you leave out the post-apocalyptic, somewhat fantastical elements, it's pretty classic Suzanne Brockmann.

The book started strong, but ended up dragging. The ending was quick and a bit dissappointing.

I'm not ordinarily a fan of scifi or fantasy fiction. For that reason, it took me a bit to get into these characters. You'll definitely see shades of Max and Jules in this book. Overall, I ended up enjoying it and the last 200 pages were by far the best. I kept thinking that in my next life I want to come back as one of Brockmann's gay characters... man! They get the BEST story lines. Suzanne Brockmann has a great way with words and making characters real. For that reason alone, I think her fans of the Trouble Shooters series will enjoy this.

I really wanted to like this book, as I love most of Suzanne's other work, but I just couldn't. The head-hopping was distracting in this one, probably because she hopped between so many characters. The concept was interesting, but the book was so dark with such terrible things happening to so many people all the time. Violent and disturbing acts overwhelmed the story. It was hard to finish. I liked many of the characters, but I doubt I will read any more of this particular series.

I did enjoy this story. Set in a near future where things are worse than they are now and you need money to get anywhere. Shane Laughlin is an ex-naval SEAL, dishonourably discharged and looking to do something, preferably honest. He's offered a chance to take part in a project and finds himself caught up in some very complicated politics and learning more about himself and human potential.
There were moments where it didn't work as well or flow as well as it could but this is the author's first SF/Near future fiction. It's not bad and I'm looking forward to more in this series. I also loved the romance between two of the male characters.
