In the 4th Nikki Heat novel, she searches for her mother's murderer! It is both suspenseful and exciting!

Sometimes there are books that add a story line to a TV show by using the characters from the show, but these are so different in that they are "written" by a character from the show and the other characters (and the actors who play them) show up in the acknowledgements. While using aspects of the on-going plot from Castle, these books develop their own stories. As more the Castle/Heat books have shown up, they have gotten better and better. At first they seemed not much more than a caricature of the show and its characters, but now these characters - clearly based on the characters in the show - begin to stand on their own.
Of the Nikki Heat books - all enjoyable - this was the most riveting. With numerous plot twists and surprises, it was hard to put Frozen Heat down, especially in the last hundred pages.

Whoever is writing these books keeps getting better. I've read these books simply because I'm a Castle fan and the nods to the show are fun. But Frozen Heat actually drew me in as a murder mystery first and as a Castle fan second. I'm not sure that makes any sense or not.

This was definitely an exciting, complicated mystery. Have to admit it made me a little crazy waiting the WHOLE BOOK for Nikki yo discover the clue whose hiding place was so obvious. Then she finally finds it, and it's the end of the book! Way to make me jump straight to the next one!

Back when I read the first Nikki Heat novel, [b:Heat Wave|6566722|Heat Wave (Nikki Heat, #1)|Richard Castle|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1257521812s/6566722.jpg|6759670], I went in to it with more than just a little bit of apprehension. How could a mystery/crime novel based on a TV show, written by a ghost writer be anything but laughable? Kudos to the marketing imagination behind it, but come on...
Now, four books later, I am a firm follower of Detective Nikki Heat, Rook, and the gang down at the 20th precinct. These books are police procedurals and seem to get better with each one. I don't know if each book is written by the same author or if a different person writes each one...but I wish I knew for sure who it was so I could look up their other work.
Yes, the similarities to the TV show, Castle, are endless, and I suppose it helps to be a fan of that show. But I think they stand on their own very nicely and are very enjoyable reads. I like the continuity between books and this one, in particular, beautifully sets us up for the next. My wife and I both watch the show and so these novels are among those that we read aloud to each other. Perhaps because we invest the time in them in this way (over a month to get through each one at only 20-25 pages per night, two to three nights per week), they become part of us in a way that other novels do not. Can't say for sure but we are both anxiously awaiting book #5 soon.

Good book. A really good book. The mystery of who killed Nikki Heat's mother was solved but an even bigger mystery has been opened; why? That myster will have to wait till the next book or beyond to be solved I think :/
While I had no idea who the actual killer was, there were mentions of important facts that the characters overlooked until the very end. I feel like the Nikki Heat we came to know in the first three books would have looked into them sooner... however it would be reasonable to assume that it was her closeneas to the case that blinded her.
Bottom line? I really enjoyed reading this book and it is going to be a super long wait for the fifth installment.
