"If you can't fix it you've got to stand it."
- guess I'll just incorporate that into my life philosophy forever!! damn!!

THE gay cowboy book. Deeply emotionally affecting. A heartbreaking, beautiful, and tragic story about two men trying and failing and trying and failing to make love work. Trying to recapture the time they shared before life circumstances stood in their way. But they can't ever go back. They will never return to Brokeback Mountain. Truly a goddamn bitch of an unsatisfactory situation.

"I wish I knew how to quit you" will never not break me into peices, I expect.

Also, the shirts in the closet... I may have cried a few buckets :')

Many books should be short stories — this was direct while still having emotional prose

Wish the character development and the falling in love / lust was more laid out

Brokeback Mountain is the tragic story of two men who can't stay away from each other, but can't afford to stay together. It is surprisingly short for how long it took me to read it, it manages to pack a lot of emotion into 55 pages. Annie Proulx's writing is unique and you might struggle reading it at first until you get used to it. This is a rare case of me preferring the movie over the book of something, but not for anything the book lacked. The movie is just a must watch, incredible. It adds scenes and delves deeper into scenes that were brief.

that damn tire iron. i liked this a lot, had to adjust to the cowboy accent. Their entire relationship and lives condensed into this short story, not much to say, not much happened tangibly, yet what went unspoken was overbearing for both of them.
I didnt realize they both had kids.

I don't know why my initial reaction is to dislike this story. When I think on it more, I have to admit that I like it. Maybe it's the sensitive love story between two men who simultaneously perpetuate toxic masculinity; maybe it's the weird feeling that so many gay love scenes are written by women.

Regardless it is strange and sweet. The two characters jump out of the pages at you fully realized and the diction and storytelling are masterful.

Personally, I did not love this story. However, I appreciate what this story represents. I read this story for one of my class assignments. I think that this story allows for great discussions and reflections on society. Its not one of my favorites but I would still recommend this to others.
