Brokeback Mountain by Annie Proulx

I don't know why my initial reaction is to dislike this story. When I think on it more, I have to admit that I like it. Maybe it's the sensitive love story between two men who simultaneously perpetuate toxic masculinity; maybe it's the weird feeling that so many gay love scenes are written by women.

Regardless it is strange and sweet. The two characters jump out of the pages at you fully realized and the diction and storytelling are masterful.
