Vor vier Jahren hätte ich es wahrscheinlich gefeiert, jetzt ging ich es nicht schlecht. Die Idee ist super aber dieser Freund von ihr ist so oberflächlich, da muss ich leider ein paar Sterne abziehen

I want a Pixie... especially one named Oscar, these pixies were fabulous they cooked, cleaned, cared, had a little attitude....
This book has been sitting in my electronic library forever, and I am so glad I finally decided to give it a go.....Lila was a fabulous female character, she was strong, smart, and best of all not whiny and stupid.... I also loved the world, the magic, the mortals, the monsters, it was all brought together so extremely well..... The action was very fast-paced and well written in this book, and also very necessary to the plot, sometimes too much action is just too much for me, but in this book it was just the right amount, or done so well I didn't notice that there was too much.... I caught on pretty quickly to who was behind the assassination attempts, but I definitely did not see the twist at the end coming, definitely excited to pick up the next book in this trilogy....

Interesting premise that magic and magical creatures are real and used as a tourism draw by Mafia-like Families. A lot of wish fulfillment fantasies - independent girl living on her own with tragic past, taken in by rich family (or Family), skilled at magic and hand-to-hand combat, attracted to boy she's supposed to be protecting.

That doesn't make it bad, just a relatively quick read with easy teen appeal. Lots of violence although it's not gory. Definitely the first in a series with an easily-spotted bad guy foiled but a bigger, badder villain running throughout the story and unvanquished at the end.

A young thief becomes involved with the machinations of the magical royal families when she ends up being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

How did I not know Estep had a new YA series out? I absolutely adored the Mythos Academy! Cold Burn of Magic is the first book in a new series. I must admit to being confused at first about the novel’s setting and time period. I almost thought I was reading a historical until I realized it was urban fantasy. I wish the setting had been explained more in detail earlier on in the narrative instead of the reader being emerged into the setting with no explanation. However, it’s a small detail that may have only nagged me.

Much like the Mythos Academy, it crafts an interesting world with intriguing characters. I absolutely adored Lila, the strong, kick-butt protagonist with a vulnerable side. I enjoyed the majority of the secondary characters, although I struggled to like Devon. It’s not that he is an unlikable character, he just comes across as “meh” to me. The plot between the different factions intrigued me and left me wanting to read more. I’m interested to see where this series goes from here.

tl;dr A strong and likable protagonist set in an interesting world is bound to entertain you, particularly if you enjoyed previous works by Estep.

This is a paranormal story but not over infused with it. Lila is a fiesty teenager just trying to survive to adulthood. Her mother was murdered and when foster care doesnt work out, MO gets her a set of papers and she hides/lives in the library and tries to live a normal teenage life. Which works out pretty well except for her side job which is stealing from the rich. As she is in Mo's shop when an attack happens that changes her whole world. As much as she tries to stay on the sidelines of the fighting families she is in the middle of it when she defends one of them. I really enjoyed this book because it was firmly rooted in the normal world with just enough paranormal to make me believe in magic.

The other strong plot was who was behind the pact to bring down one of the families. This was deftly covered through out the whole book with layers peeling away like an onion. It was a nail biter at the end as to who would survive and if the devious pact would be destroyed.

My Review: This book rates as high as the frost series in my opinion. I love Jennifer's writing style and the way she makes kickass girls! And now I have something to look forward to in Nov. Book 2, Dark Heart of Magic will be out! So this story is about an orphan with secrets of her own as she takes care of herself but then gets caught in something that changes her life forever. The twist in this story had me gasping for air at the end and I couldn't read this book any faster than I did. And lets just say what another colorful world she painted for us again. Thanks again for writing these stories for us!

Cold Burn of Magic is a unique young adult urban fantasy romance, but for fans of Jennifer Estep's Elemental Assassin series, the story will have a very familiar feel.

Lila has been on her own since she was 13 years old, making a living as a thief and pickpocket on the fantastic streets of Cloudburst Falls. (The name of the town evokes images of Disneyland or some other amusement park, and it fits because the town makes its money by showing off its magical features to tourists.) When she helps save a stranger's life, she finds herself embroiled in the nasty mob politics, as well as in the middle of several assassination attempts.

Lila is bad ass and snarky, with very little filter even when diplomacy might be needed. It's part of the reason I loved her. The magical system is one-of-a-kind, breathing new air into the urban fantasy genre. It's a relief to read something different from the typical witches, werewolves and vampires.

Perhaps the only unfortunate thing is that, as mentioned above, Cold Burn has many similarities to Estep's Elemental Assassin series, just with a YA bent. (I just started that series and am currently on book 4.) Lila's back story is very similar to Gin Blanco: her mother died when she was 13, she lived on the streets, she had a mentor figure watching out for her, etc. Not only is she magical, but she also is super, super special and extra magical (much like Gin), with extra-rare abilities. For people like me, who have recently read the assassin series, the character may seem a bit stale, but for fans who have not read the series or who haven't read it in awhile, it will feel fresh and fun.

Thanks to Kensington Books via Netgalley for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

Somehow I just knew this book was going to be good and I was right! This story follows Lila who is a thief in the most magical place in America as she struggles to survive on her own. Despite her loner mentality when she sees a fight happening nearby she decides to step in and help. Her help leads to her saving the life of one of the most prominent members of one of the ruling Families. Now she has to deal with Family politics, assassins, and hiding her magic just to continue her survival. This is definitely an extremely well done YA fantasy and I will immediately be reading book 2!

Lila has been on her own since her mother was murdered four years earlier. She has survived stealing for her friend’s pawn shop and living in the library basement. Her goal is to stay off the feuding Families’ radar and finish high school. Neither looks like a long term option when the Family feud finds its way into the pawn shop and Lila ends up saving Devon Sinclair. Now she is asked to help protect Devon and Lila believes she will end up like her mother … dead because of the Families.

Cold Burn of Magic is the first book in a new series by Jennifer Estep. Readers will be pulled into the story quickly and the action weaved throughout will keep them turning page after page. Estep has created a world that is slightly different than our own since magic and its monsters are known, yet readers who don’t normally enjoy fantasy stories can still devour this adventure tale. The second book is scheduled to come out later this year and I will definitely be looking for it.
