This book is brilliant. It sucked me back into reading after a 6 month block. The characters are fierce and each one their own personality. The magic system is awesome with magical kisses just being the beginning. I couldn't put the book down and finished it in two days. I can't wait for the next book!

This was a slow read or me. I think there’s too much rising exposition that slows it down. But once the action revs up, I did find that I wanted to keep reading. The premise is not novel, forbidden magic and those who would usurp their autonomy and those who would vilify and persecute. However, there some definite parallels to the struggle in the real world over bodily autonomy, equality, and empowerment.

Really liked the different characters, their storylines, and how they all evolve together. Some parts felt a bit long and slow but overall, good and curious about the next book.

Kate J. Armstrong’s Nightbirds is an immersive and enchanting fantasy novel set in a world where magic is a rare, dangerous commodity. The story follows three Nightbirds—Matilde, Æsa, and Sayer—young women who possess the ability to bestow their magical powers with just a kiss. This rare gift places them in the crosshairs of a society eager to exploit their abilities for wealth and control.
Armstrong crafts a beautifully intricate world, full of political intrigue and societal divisions. The glamorous yet dangerous setting is brought to life with vivid descriptions that pull the reader into the world of the Nightbirds. Each of the girls' journeys toward self-discovery and reclaiming their autonomy is compelling, and their diverse personalities add richness to the narrative. Themes of empowerment, loyalty, and rebellion run deep, making this more than just a magical adventure—it’s a reflection on the fight for freedom in the face of oppression.
While the plot is engaging and full of twists, the pacing slows in places, and some of the secondary characters could have been more developed. I'm also not a huge fan of strong feminist themes. However, the captivating world-building and complex relationships make up for these shortcomings.
Overall, Nightbirds is a gripping, character-driven tale that fantasy fans will thoroughly enjoy. Armstrong has created a unique world filled with danger, intrigue, and strong female leads. A solid start to what could be an exciting new series!

Very good, very YA novel. I’m laughing/cringing at some of the substitute curse words, but what can you expect from YA

Nightbirds is a difficult one for me to review as there are things I believe Armstrong did really well, but overall I struggled to enjoy the story. I loved the concept of strong, powerful women with unique magic. However, I didn’t really connect with any of the main characters making it difficult for me to connect with the overall story. Another aspect I enjoyed was the roaring 20s-esque setting to the story. I also felt the audiobook was a good way to approach this book and may be the main reason I finished it. I felt the narrator did a good job of distinguishing between the different POVs.
