I really did like this story. It felt like a story, in the truest sense, with lovely references to things I feel are important in life. Those who value Kate Morton stories will also value this one. I hate “beach reads” more than anything, so this is my version of a beach read, if you need a quick page turner, that you will easily get lost in. I read it in 3 sittings. Well worth the time. I loved the setting, the time period forward backward 20 years (again why I love Kate Morton.) Set in London, and else where in England, and referring those who value books, writing, and storytelling…
I do not feel this could be a disappointment to anyone-well done! I’m interested in checking out this authors others novels.

Closer to 3.5… great ending, took way to long for me to connect to these characters

An intersection of magic and storytelling with familial love and loss told in alternating time periods. As part of Operation Pied Piper 3 million children were evaluated from.popular centers to supposedly safer rural homes in 4 days. Trainloads of children were send to different stations and "chosen" to live with families. This is the story of Hazel and her sister, Flora Lea, their secret magical kingdom of Whisperwood and a tragic day at the river. I found myself more drawn to the latter day story when Hazel finds a book about Whisperwood, but I can imagine msny folks would be more immersed in Whisperwood. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

I loved this book so so much and not just because a side character's name is Bridgette and she's called Bridie, which my mum and sister call me.
This book was about love, longing, despair, hope, childhood whimsy, adventure and imagination. It grabbed hold of my heart and made me feel. I loved it dearly!

This is a wonderful and beautifully written book that will stay with me! I've read a lot of WW2 historical fiction but this one is different than any of the other WW2 books I've read. The story begins in 1939 in a small village in the countryside in England where 14 yr old Hazel and 5 yr old Flora are being billeted since they were evacuated from London. It seems that they are living in a fairy tale in a magical place with a wonderful family until Flora disappears after seemingly falling into the river. We jump around between the past and the present (which is 1960, 20 yrs in the future) where Hazel finds a clue that may lead her to her lost but never forgotten sister. I loved this book so much! I couldn't put it down!
