i typically enjoy books about human connection, with a lack of plot and plenty of social commentary threaded without. but the key to this genre is a strong personal connection to the characters,, and this book did not achieve this for me in a way that sally rooney (for example) has always.
i did not feel for any of the characters; hate them or love them. and i NEED that in my books so that is why it is 2 stars but probably 2.5.

The Trio is about young college going people in Stockholm. The story is told through multiple POVs and I loved Thora’s the most followed by Hugo’s. It took a while for me to get into the book because it felt a bit slow and repetitive at the start but after the one third mark,I was quite invested.
The writing is quiet and clean and there were several passages which highlighted some thoughts that felt so relatable to me. The things left unsaid in the book trigger certain emotions as the characters flit in and out of each others’ lives. Thora was an interesting character to read about even if all of them came off as a bit pretentious.
The Trio,at its heart is about relationships and it has the vibes of Conversations With Friends and Normal People which is one of the reasons why I loved it since it scratches the Sally Rooney itch a bit.
An emotionally intense book which felt very intimate

I’m in between 3.5 and 3 for this one. The pace at the beginning was excellent but the middle was slow and tedious. I enjoyed reading from the perspectives of Hugo and Thora. It would’ve been good to also read from August’s perspective too.
The plot was interesting and not really what I was expecting at all. There were quite a few quotes that resonated with me in relation to loneliness and needing to put on a different personality depending on who you’re with. I guess that was the whole premise of the book.
I can’t help but think how toxic the relationships were though?!? Not sure if i enjoyed that. Like just COMMUNICATE.
Honestly though, I don’t think there was enough character development. Hugo essentially remained the same the whole novel.
