The narrator is the only reason I finished this one. The book itself is so so so slow. Two hours into it, there's still no actual story, just rambling about the history of the O'Malley history. I almost gave up at that point, but ultimately decided the narrators' voice was soothing enjoy that, if anything, I was content to continue listening because if I fell asleep or completely zoned out, it was fine with me.

There were bright spots in the story eventually but they were few and far between. I will say, the descriptions and atmosphere were beautiful. I'm not familiar with a lot of the folklore used throughout, but the mer, kelpie, and ghosts were very interesting and were by far my favourite part of this book.

This had the making of a great book but it failed to deliver. I cannot say that nothing happens but the story never really takes off. A lot of things do happen that on their own would be interesting but they do not actually get explored or tie in to the story in any way so it all falls flat. The prose and premise were good, but there was no plot to grip you.

Miren’s fate has been tied to the Mer by her ancestors. She fights to survive and then to be free of the expectations placed on her by her blood and the bargain that was struck. Quite dark in places.

There's nothing I don't like about this book, except that it ended. Part fairy tale, part family saga, part promises broken and promises kept.

After her grandmother's death, Maren O'Malley runs from her arranged marriage and goes in search of the parents who abandoned her in infancy. To tell anymore would deny anyone reading this the pleasure of the story.
