I've never in my life read something as dreary as this. This whole book is a giant ramble, and the main character is flaky and overdramatic and everything is made out to be far, far more serious and grim and it needs to be. Even the smallest issues are world ending here. None of the characters have believable writing, and the story only picks up after its half over. And even then it's so dull, dull, dull. And with all the rambling you'd think they'd go in to enough effort to make me attached to a person or place, or even give me good details but no, all the rambling is just the main character rambling in her head.
It took me a month to finish it solely because i dreaded reading it and procrastinated on it forever. I only give it two stars instead of one because I'm surprised i actually finished it, so it wasn't entirely devoid of a story after all even if it felt like it was.

The writing is gorgeous, the world building is delightful and dark and and intriguing, the plot (while slow--achingly at points) is plenty twisty. It is exactly what the pitch says: a gothic fairytale, and a really good one at that. I just wanted a slightly bigger pay off and few more answers.

Gave the audio book a listen during a solo trip with the dogs to a cold Pacific Northwest beach during November, and it was the perfect companion that mirrored my surroundings.

Great storytelling in this novel set in what seems to be an alternative victorian-era UK. I'm not sure if the locations were real and I just don't know UK geography or if it was some kind of Ireland analogue. Miren is nearly the last of a once-powerful family which has suffered a great decline in fortune, and she not-so-secretly looks forward to the day very soon when she will be the last and able to free herself from the trappings of family obligations and legacies. When it begins to look as though she might never be free, she takes matters into her own hands and stumbles onto a clue which might unlock family secrets. There's a lot of mystery that unfolds at just the right pace, enough action to keep the plot moving along believably, and some really wonderful storytelling giving flavor to the mystical and magical world Miren lives in. I can't think of much to fault this book for, other than perhaps it being a little dark. I can't wait to read more by A.G. Slatter.
