Marsden you are a bad person. You killed my favourite character. How could you? You have no soul. But the book is amazing, so much better than the other two.

I haven't been so absorbed in a story since I was a kid. I'm getting worried that I'll get through these too quickly. What will I read then?

This series was always about a darker subject matter, but this volume took it to a pretty dark place. At least 2, and likely 3, of the main characters have died. At this point, I have to assume everyone except Ellie ends up unalived by the end. there were a few things about this one that bothered me - maybe I just skipped right over it as I was reading, but were there clocks in the jail? How did Ellie keep knowing exactly how much time had passed without clocks? But I don’t remember them explicitly saying there were clocks. I’ve also suspended my disbelief for the first two books, but it’s getting much harder to do as the events keep getting more and more grand and require more acute knowledge. it’s safe to say I’m going to take a break from this series for a bit and come back at it in the new year, but I will be finishing it. Still interested to see how everything comes together.

"‘I refuse to think fear. I will think strong. I will think brave."
"When true fear sweeps in, when panic knocks down your walls, no defence can keep it out."
"I didn’t want to show any fear. I wanted to keep my fear all to myself: a storm inside but a desert on my face. That was the only way I could maintain any kind of strength."
"I felt like I was going to be ill, like I had some serious illness creeping up on me. But I knew the name of that serious illness. It was called death."

"You have to believe in something. That is all."
wow. action packed adventure. The kids: Fi, Lee, Ellie, Homer & Robyn are still free....well, more like 'not held hostage.'
But for this group, not being caught is never enough. Their families and neighbors are still being held - and now they are being forced to work to start repairing houses and farms to give over to the people who invaded the country.
after devising a plan, they are able to make another attack on the island against those who have invaded.
but will they all make it out alive? Is it the best decision to make? they are still just kids....can they really pull this off?
I love how John Marsden has done a wonderful job of taking these kind of silly teenagers and really making them grow up, grow de-sensitized and really have to live this Hell. Not just in Hell, but each of their own versions of it too. Just amazing and well done. and wow, what they have been through.
This series is absolutely wonderful! I can't wait for the next one! I have no idea where this is going from here!!

The end of this book was horribly great. This series is fantastic but the horrible part is this... WHY OH WHY DOES ROBYN HAVE TO DIE AT THE END OF THIS BOOK WHY CAN'T SOMEONE JUST STAY ALIVE AND HAVE A HAPPY ENDING. But no this is not a happy ending. Nor is it a happy book. Quite traumatic and reading any book just can not prepare you for this experience. However, yet again the third book in the series was great with more action packed events then in the previous books. This book was probably my favourite one so far but also kind of my least favourite at the same time. I liked it because there was many different amazing events. And then with the explosions and finding Kevin and him escaping. These were some great things but then again, there was Ellie who one minute loved Lee and then the next she didn't. I never quite know what to expect in this series. I can figure out that some events would have to happen at some point in the series but I can never pick when. I found this book funny in some ways and had a laugh over quite a few parts of this book. One thing I find funny out of this whole series is that only Ellie ever drives and no one else does. It seems that no one can either except for maybe one person. I love how when the group (Lee, Kevin, Homer, Fi, Robyn and Ellie) where caught that firstly they were caught, like how did that happen but when they all arrived at the prison and were interrogated, no one believed that they did all these destructive things and explosions. Overall, great read and highly recommend.

Another great entry.
In this entry we catch up with the group as they take on their biggest military target to date; Cobbler's Bay. The Bay has been referenced in the other books yet I always assumed it would be attacked in the finale book, which I was wrong about, and from the end of this book it's clear that the series will be going in a completely different direction to the one I had first assumed.
The suspense of the attack is handled (as always by this point) brilliantly, with even the more outlandish moments, like getting caught up in a tidal wave created by an explosion, seeming realistic and believable. It continues to surprise me how detailed and exciting the author manages to make the 'tactics' of the novel, especially with things like sentry duty, which helps the suspense of believing the kids could get caught at any moment. I'm also shocked by how much the violence is escalating with every instalment, with this entry having the main character 'toughen up' and realise that she can deal with killing in cold blood and realising as 'the leader' of the group that the responsibility to protect them falls on her shoulders. This is also the first time where the main character seems to have a real crisis of faith, and even though we know that she will inevitably be okay, the parts where Ellie simply chooses to accept that death is coming, are a lot darker than I imagined the novels to become.
The ending certainly takes a turn I wasn't expecting, and it will be interesting to see how the story continues without the old setting of their town, and the fresh blood that will no doubt be a part of the new setting.
Overall, another great entry, let's hope they keep up this level of quality.
