I’m really surprised I don’t hear about this book more often. The story is great and kept me engaged. It was exciting and had a great plot, lots of action, and overall an amazing story. Highly recommended by me.

I actually really liked the premise of this book, but I simply could not connect with any of the characters. Their actions often did not make much sense, and their feelings towards one another would change on a dime for no clear reason. I wanted to like it more! 2.5 stars.

Just when I’m ready to give up YA entirely, I find one that I don’t hate. I’m tired of TSTL heroines. I liked Raven. She was a little overly rebellious but she was strong. Her character flaws were believable and how she befriended the enemy was believable. I riveting little read.

Oh my goodness, this book was action packed. There was a point when I couldn't believe how much had happened in the book because it didn't seem to correlate with the amount of chapters I had read.
There wasn't a conventional romance, I would actually say the romance was very limited. This is a book focused on conflict, action, and the consequences of those actions.
It was just so good. I highly recommend to anyone looking for young adult science fiction that takes place on Earth.
**** Great read, 4 stars ****

Really good. I picked this up because it was on Alex Brown's best YA SFF list for 2017 over at Tor.com and it was one of a few on there I hadn't yet read. Also the author is Canadian:)
This alien invasion book focuses on character development and lots of inner dialogue about emotion rather than action scenes, so if that's your thing, you might enjoy it. The ending was great, and has me looking forward to the sequel.

I’ll be completely honest - in the first half of the story I was feeling very meh about this story. Halfway through, I definitely became more invested. The last 15% really grabbed me though - I kind of had an inkling where it might be going - and let’s just say I’m really invested now.
There was much more emotion in the second half, and I think that was what I was missing in the first half. Raven lacked heart for me until August rocked up. And he lacked personality without her.
Hence the four stars. If I was rating this book on the last 15%, I’d be giving it five without a moment’s hesitation.
So from being unsure about reading the second book, I’m going to pick it right up now and get started, because things have really gotten interesting…

This book is the thing I’ve been searching for a long time: a truly original YA post-apocalyptic. No insta-love, no simple answers, no easy endings for anyone. This book is more real than most realistic YA fiction, and I say that as someone who doesn’t read a lot of sci-fi. The plot is agonizing and gut-wrenching and stars a kick-ass female lead that doesn’t act like a twit or as if the person who wrote her has never met a kick-ass girl in real life. Pick it up. Pick it up now.

I was provided an ARC of this book by the publisher through a Goodreads giveaway. This in no way affects the integrity of my review.
This is a really difficult book to rate because I liked the book overall, it had an interesting premise and the execution of it was also strong, but at the same time it was a lot darker, less sci-fi and more dystopia than I was expecting it to be. I think the key to truly enjoying this book is to go in with the right expectations. It is definitely not a super action-filled, fast-paced book; it is more slow, character driven, and heavy on the survival struggle of a post apocalyptical situation.
I really liked the diversity of the characters, which isn't usually seen as much of in non-contemporary books. Though the plot line would seem to be more action based, it is very heavy on the character development and focuses on different interactions from two different perspectives. The first half is a lot of buildup and it honestly doesn't really start to pick up until the second half. There is a twist at the end and it is shocking but I admit that I guessed from almost the very beginning of the book. I think I will continue with the series, but I hope that the second book will have a more fast paced plot now that the world building has been developed.
