I received an ARC of this book at Yallwest 2017.
Wow, I really did not expect that ending and I'm normally a good guesser. I mean I kind of guessed a detail maybe like 30 pages before the actual surprise ending but wtf. This was really good and quite easy to read.
I would compare it to a Canadian 5th wave but better and I highly recommend this book for fans of dystopians. The main character is also a badass black belt POC named Raven who isn't very good at relationships.
Possible light spoilers ahead:
I really liked the relationship between Raven and August. It wasn't insta-love (well for her) or even insta-friendship. Raven hates August for over 100 pages while he's super nice and doing nothing wrong and I really liked that. It felt very realistic and made me care that much more about them since I got to see their relationship evolve into something entirely different. I'm really looking forward to the sequel to see what happens next to Raven and August as well as Xander.

Wow. It's tough to really summarize my overall feelings about this book but the biggest takeaway, I guess, is that this book really made me feel something. I read a lot and honestly don't always connect with the characters, but August really impacted me for some reason. I already have a copy of the sequel coming in the mail and can't wait to crack the spine.

**Thanks so much to the publisher for allowing me to read this in exchange for an honest review!**
what i liked
This book reminds me a lot of The 5th Wave, yet it's still different. It has its own characters, its own faults, its own plot, its own story and cliffhangers. I absolutely ate it up.
The tenseness throughout the novel--I literally couldn't stop reading at some points and didn't want to believe other parts of the novel because of how much it affected me.
I literally loved the characters. Eighth and Raven were great. I loved reading through both of their perspectives, but if I had to pick a favorite, it would definitely be Eighth.
THIS WORLD. It's all messed up and interesting and I just loved it.
what i didn't like
The pacing felt extremely slow at times. I felt like it dragged on at parts and it took me a little bit to get interested in the book in the beginning. Other than that, I found no faults!!

This was okay, but other similar-genre fiction I've read this year has been better.
Things I liked: the strange communication style of the Nahx. Their backstory, still unfolding- why are they humans? What's going on there.
Things I didn't like: histrionic social dynamics- the dead twin and the twin that hates Raven... the idea that Raven is just "special" and can penetrate whatever brainwashing Eighth has going on. It was a little too Bella-and-Edward for me, though I do think Raven is more of a badass with more agency.
Overall the world-building is intriguing but extremely bleak. The cliffhanger ending has me intrigued.
