Simply amazing. I read it in 2 days because I could not put it down. So creepy and disturbing and interesting.

Man, I don't know. I just didn't like it. Looking at it as a piece of literature outside of genre, the characters were boring and had poor development. The story wasn't very captivating and was poorly paced. The romance felt forced and unnatural. However my primary disappointment was that, as a horror novel, it was appallingly not scary, horrific, or tense. Every beat felt so formulaic and predictable that I never felt the intensity or urgency of the story. I felt bored throughout the whole story, and at the end I felt just ambivalent about the characters as I did in the beginning. I'm no horror connoisseur because I'm pretty easily scared. But this was a miss all around.

The story and setting were both very intriguing. Excellent gothic mystery elements and great building of suspense, but by the end I just felt kind of... let down. It felt like it was missing something.

The scene-setting engaged me and the plot held a decent amount of mystery, but it ultimately fell a little flat for me. A little too much fantasy for my taste. Perhaps a bit too long spent by the main character wandering the house and not really questioning much about what was happening there even though she had definitive cause to. I found Virgil and Florence's behavior and attitudes sickening but that was the point. Some things also felt unresolved
, like the wound around Noemí's wrist and the sudden turn in Howard's health
.

This book lives up to the hype. It was a difficult book to read at times but I loved the narrative. The mystery at the core was fascinating and I was always completely invested in the story. The setting of 1950s Mexico was one I had not read about before and helped create the stage for this gothic horror story. A must read!
