I enjoyed the audiobook with the narrator's English accent, especially because it's set in England/UK, but she drags out her "S"'s at the end of sentences which was annoying.

As far as the story, I think it was a missed opportunity. Meghan was self-deprecating (was she supposed to be?), and the connection between Justin's past and the lodge could have been tighter. I kept waiting for the big moment where it all comes together between Bella, Finn, and Justin but it was a bummer. Justin may have been a bit arrogant and an asshole but Bella and Finn were almost as savage in Dare.

When Harriet picked up Meghan from the manor and made her ride in the "boot," to which she agreed to do easily, I was like COME ON! Ridiculous. Predictable. "Oh, I'm sorry that window is all boarded up!" Predictable. "Oh, Harriet tricked me. I miss Justin. Shall I call Justin or the police? Should I go find Harriet and have her unlock her phone?" Pathetic.

It had so much potential as a psychological thriller. Bummer.

It was so hard to finish this book. I almost DNF twice and when I did get to the end, I regretted the decision to continue. The MC was sickeningly pathetic and not one of the characters was at all likeable or remotely realistic.

I believe that the protagonist behaves in a way that is realistic for people in her situation. However, I don’t always find that to be an enjoyable thing to read. I want protagonists in peril to behave in a way that I like to pretend that I would.

That said, I was with her until she willingly got in someone’s trunk.

This book was so damn hard to read. I don’t think it was my cup of tea. The ratio of spoken dialogue to inner dialogue was very uneven, often with characters stating the same ideas and thoughts over and over again. The plot was super thin, the twists weren’t really twists, except the one about
Harriet
. The way the book ended felt extremely rushed, not well thought out, and VERY anticlimactic. At multiple times throughout the book, I wanted to dnf but was hopeful that there would be some kind of payoff - there wasn’t. This read more as a cautionary tale for
women in abusive domestic relationships
rather than a thriller. And the “conflict” with Megan finding out who left her the message was dragged on way too long and the reveal wasn’t anything huge.

The book tried to be ominous, but everything was very plainly laid out with no deeper meaning, and the villains were clearly villains the entire time. The redemptive moment near the end didn’t hold much weight for me.

The warning is a suspense book about a woman who lost her children in a fire and a year later is trying to cope with the trauma along with her husband by going to the town he spent summers in.

This book overall I would say has an interesting plot however I do with it was thought a little bit better. Its slow in the beginning and towards the middle their flashbacks of the husbands' summers that I felt were too long for a whole 5+ chapters of background for characters we never get conclusions for.

The way it set up to keep you guessing is good however having all the thrilling parts literally right at the end of the book didn't bode well for me. I wish that the set up for guessing who it did was done a little better and it just feels like to me it could have been throughout

If you love thrillers like I do I wouldn't recommend this book if you love to try to figure out, who did it before the end. If your new to the suspense thriller world I would recommend this book to you as it could be a good entry into that world of suspense.

I am willing to give the author another try with another book.

While I'm trying to be sympathetic and understanding of the main character, I found her to be unlikeable. I really tried to understand the trauma she has gone through because I have been fortunate enough to not be a victim of DV. I desperately wanted her to be somewhat of a heroine but I just cannot fathom anyone being that gullible. I found her to be unrelatable and sometimes annoying. I did finish the book quickly, so it couldn't have been that uninteresting. However, I am not sure if it's because I cared about Megan's future or because I just wanted to complete the book.
I will say I did not see some of the plot twists coming, other than the ending. That is why I'm willing to read another book from AJ Wills.

Picked this up and was eager to start having heard good things. The author is self published which I have huge respect for (being self published myself).
The writing is gripping and fraught with tension. Well written and brilliantly executed.
Short chapters make for easy reading and the cliff hangers are nail bitingly addictive!

What I struggled with was the plot and the twists and the main character herself.
It started off well and I imagined it being a 5 star read but I'm afraid the decisions that the MC made and her internal thoughts were so frustrating and unnecessary.
The twists I found predictable and guessed them all. I found two of the characters very one-dimensional and just couldn't understand why Megan didn't see what was happening.

I really wanted to love this one but the more I read the more unbelievable and ridiculous the plot became.

I will be trying more books from this author though! Definitely a gripping and tense thriller...so I would recommend it but be prepared for a crazy ride!
