This was a good book. I love the suspense that Linwood Barclay builds throughout the book. Although some of it was predictable, there were enough twists to keep it interesting.

This was recommended to me by my Goodreads friend, Corey. His review is here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1990146072

At first, I wasn’t sure I wanted to read this book. It seemed like my worst nightmare. A father looking in on his daughter at her job and finds out she doesn’t work there. What? Who is she? What does he not know about his own daughter?

I love that my adult sons call me all the time and tell me what is going on with them, and ask me advice about their jobs and life in general. I can’t ever imagine being faced with this kind of dilemma. But then again, I am not in this mystery.

So here we are readers.

Which makes this the perfect title of a book. Fear the worst? Oh yes. I know I would, too. And this certainly makes for a perfect beleaguered protagonist. And putting the reader through the emotional wringer. Thank you, Corey!

I was prepared to not like this book, maybe because the main character seemed kind of dull...but I was pleasantly surprised. The story is unique and Linwood Barclay does have a way with words. Easy read and makes me want to check out others by him.

This started out well. I like the way Linwood Barclay takes ordinary people (a car salesman in this case) and puts them in extraordinary situations. His characters' actions and motivations are mostly believable, he's very good at dialogue, and there is plenty of wit as well as drama. The theme is handled well and guaranteed to give shivers to any parent. I liked the way the relationships between Tim, his ex-wife, and his wife's new partner were handled. He throws in plenty of loose ends and false trails to keep you guessing. And I even quite enjoyed Tim's obsession with cars -- I think I know every make and model of car in the US now!

So I enjoyed this book until the last few chapters when it really started getting out of control. From just an ordinary guy, Tim is transformed into some kind of action super-hero, leaving a trail of dead bodies in his wake. And then the book just stops, leaving you wondering how Bob, Sydney, and Tim are going to explain themselves to the police. They should keep the criminal justice system busy for a few years. It could have been a bit shorter too, and the sub-plot with Patty was just too contrived and unnecessary. Despite its gaping plot holes, I thought [b:No Time for Goodbye|1225261|No Time for Goodbye|Linwood Barclay|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1182031065s/1225261.jpg|2906898] was better.

One of my favorite Barclay novels so far. I read it within 2 days. His suspense novels are great diversions, the kind of book you can immerse yourself in. I like the way he gives you clues to what is going on. He never provides random information for no reason - so you know it will come into play later. This book still had some surprises for me, so he doesn't give everything away.

This was a chance find at the op shop for a $1 but sounded interesting and was rated by uk tv presenters! Well I was addicted and finished it quickly. Keeps u guessing, in depth characters and a bloody excellent read, highly recommend it!
A girl goes missing, yet no one at her place of work has ever heard of her when daddy goes looking for her. What follows is a trail of surprises and mystery with a great ending leaving me thirsty for more by this author.

After reading a few Linwood Barclay's I'm beginning to see a pattern emerging in the writing style, characters and plots. As in, they are all quite similar. This isn't a bad thing really, but it does put a damper on the tension and shock that is felt while reading.

Fear the Worst in particular was enjoyable, there were a few twists that I didn't see coming, maybe a few 'coincidences' which in retospect were stretching it a bit, still, I enjoyed it.

I do enjoy mystery books where the police aren't the focus of the investigation, and instead just some guy is putting his all into figuring things out. This story threw in just a few more twists than you were expecting and it definitely compelled me to read it as quickly as possible. A bit of a stark ending, but at least it wasn't drawn out and mushy like some can be.
