fiction about a grieving daughter who visits Japan for the first time to read the will of her late Japanese father. I picked this book up at my local book exchange but when I read the blurb and started the book, I wasn’t sure if this is my sort of book. I was pleasantly surprised by the text and in particular the romantic relationship which blossoms. Overall it was a sweet, short text which was enjoyable in its insight into Japanese culture.

i won’t lie— i couldn’t get into this book at first. muriel barberry is a wonderful writer and i loved the prose from the getgo, but i just couldn’t find myself in any of the characters.
the second half of this book though was so beautifully written and the characters developed so well in such a short amount of time. definitely worth the read (and it’s a short one!).

This is one of the most beautifully crafted novels I have ever read. In addition to which, the poetry of the translation is both ethereal and yet very grounded, if that makes sense. Like the protagonist’s thoughts and emotions, the imagery is fluid.
Very few characters’ struggles have resonated with me so effectively, and I am not sure how much of this is the result of the unquestionable artistry of the author and how much due to personal experiences, but both Rose and Paul’s characterizations are equally effective for me, so I lean towards the former.
I have read it twice now, and am hunting out a first edition for my permanent library. This one will be read over many times.
