A bit tame alongside Harry Potter, but it was written in 1942. This was a re-read to my little one (after more than half a century), and I found myself changing a lot of the language/ expressions mid-sentence as they make no sense these days. Whether as a result of my in-narration edits or the thrill of the ingots of gold in the castle dungeon, the aforementioned little one gave it a solid 5 stars.

Hm, I used to love these as a kid, but as an adult, not so much, and the narrator is a bit odd, good at voices but very clipped, I don’t like her.

... reading with my 9 year old daughter...
I've read all these books way back when I was a child and I've read them numerous times. This book is the second book by this author that my daughter and I have read together. She loved it dearly.

Five on a Treasure Island is a fun adventure novel with a lovable cast of characters. It conveys fantastic messages that are important for children and adults alike. I think its biggest flaw is the writing. I know that it's written for children and that the chapters need to be short and to the point, but that really killed my excitement at times. I got into it and boom - chapter done. The last few chapters I felt were the weakest in terms of writing. It was underwhelming and very simplified, and the dialogue awkward. Despite the issues, I did enjoy the novel and I'm glad it got me into the reading habit. I did not realise there were 21 books in this series, so I doubt I'll continue this.
