very dense - boring to read

 Dit is waarschijnlijk het beste boek dat ik dit jaar (en eigenlijk ooit) heb gelezen. Oprecht fantastisch. Ik had de tijd nodig om dit boek te laten bezinken, want ik was sprakeloos toen ik het uit had. 

In een ideale wereld had ik Harpman kunnen vragen naar elk detail van de wereld en de personages in dit boek en wat er precies is gebeurd, maar dit is niet die ideale wereld en dat is niet de bedoeling. 

We weten wat de vrouwen weten en dat is niets. Het punt van dit boek is om hun belevingen en ervaringen in deze dystopische wereld te kennen en in te zien aan welke sociale commentaren deze zijn gekoppeld. 

Het eindresultaat is een intelligent, maar pijnlijk boek. 

I was interested in The Quarter and the people living in it. The short stories were, well, short. This made some of them not really say much and lack some depth. There usually were some vague morals in each story. Can't say I really enjoyed the portrayal of most women in this. 

The writing style read fast and was nice, but nothing special.

confusing, disjointed and nonsensical 

I love how this is a combination of the authors anecdotes about being a Taylor Swift fan, while also providing an interesting ideas about what Taylor has achieved in her career and which impact it had. While I would have liked more of those analyses, I also appreciated the authors personal stories and ideas.

There were some opinions which I didn't 100% agree with (All You Had To Do Was Stay is a good track five!), but it's subjective of course. It was an intelligent exploration of Taylor's career from the point of view from a fan and music journalist. A few chapters focus on one song and what I liked doing a lot, was listening to those songs while reading that chapter. It adds another experience.

Great book, great author!

The idea of this story sounded more interesting, than the execution of it. The start and ending of the story were both good, but were dragged down with the middle where nothing really happened. The writing style was confusing, which helped with mystery but also made me glance over parts of the lines. The bread imagery was used very well. It was referenced in a lot of elements of the story or metaphors. I missed something that made this story feel alive. It felt rather monotonous to read.

I found this very confusing. There is a concept there that is very philosophical about meory and time. And it’s mixed with a time travel-like fiction story. This lost the point of what was this book wanted to be. 

Martelaar! verscheen plots overal op mijn sociale media en de blurb sprak mij oprecht aan. Toch was dit boek niet echt wat ik had verwacht. 

Persoonlijk vond ik dat de auteur te veel verschillende perspectieven wou gebruiken. Voor mij was het genoeg geweest als de focus meer op de gesprekken op Death-Speak met Cyrus en de ervaringen van Roya werd gefocust. De andere perspectieven en de vreemde droom-gesprekken waren overbodig. Misschien miste ik ergens de dieptere laag. 

De vertaling las ook vrij moeilijk op sommige moment. Zinnen werden raar vertaald en het stoorde mij. Ik heb te vaak een zin opnieuw moeten lezen, omdat de opbouw ervan niet vlot is. 

Inhoudelijk vond ik de ideeën over martelaarschap, de dood en verslaving interessant and waardevol. 

Conclusie: veel potentieel, maar had voor mij hier en daar nog wat geëdit kunnen worden.
