Yaqui Delgado Wants to Kick Your Ass by Meg Medina
4.0
Yaqui Delgado reminded me of the not- so- fair educational system and its bullying policies. As a teacher in Philly, I saw many students transfer because the bully was able to stay in the school due to numerous technicalities. I loved the reality created in this novel and the message that teenagers get stressed too! Every parent should read this book with their kids.
The Library of the Dead by T.L. Huchu

The premise of the book is interesting. The main character, Rosa, is the a tough as nails badass who heal things like “eat my vag!” The book is set in Scotland while incorporating Zimbabwean magic. While the book was cool, it didn’t hold my attention. I will chalk that to my tolerance for YA sci-fi/ fantasy. I did give it to my daughter to read and she LOVES the book so, may be it just me.
Taken to Voraxia by Elizabeth Stephens

UUUUUMMMMMM Ms. Stephens, no one told you to go off on this series the way you did!!!! I’m in love with the whole series!!!!!!! EVERY SINGLE BOOK!!!!
Taken to Voraxia was amazing. The world building is on point. The smut is written beautifully. I wasn’t expecting that tail work ;-) While Taken to Voraxia isn’t my favorite book in the series, it is the gateway that allowed me to explore this world.
Read it!! Read them all!!!

Deadly Class Volume 1: Reagan Youth by Rick Remender

I bought this series on a whim. I’ve been watching Assassination Classroom and realized I enjoyed seeing high school kids learn to be assassins. That says more about me than I care to admit. Ummm…whatever I thought this series was gonna do was hilariously wrong. The end of vol. 1 shocked me, grossed me out, and now I will be reading vol 2 in the next few days….
Bottom line. I love it.

The Wicked + The Divine, Vol. 4: Rising Action by Kieron Gillen

Thankfully, the original artist is back in this volume. because volume 3 almost made me DNF this…like I did DC’s The Silencer.
The Unbroken by C.L. Clark

Good debut. I’m very interested in book 2. Book 1 did fall into some typical debut fantasy pitfalls but it deter me enough to lose interest. I spent most of my time frustrated at both main characters making ridiculous choices.
Brown Girl in the Ring by Nalo Hopkinson
I read this book with my book club in July. This book has a clever and amazing take on generational traumas, reparations, and Caribbean lore. What I connected to the most was the novel’s very real depiction of three generations of women struggling to understand one another. I felt seen in so many way reading this story.
