i am lowkey mad that i waited for months for my turn to borrow this book, only to be presented with this mess. i actually agree with some of the reviews on here, this book simply could not decide what it wanted to be. there are a lot of things sprinkled in but they were just there and unpolished.
it didn’t help that i did not like any of the characters. the revelation at the 90% mark also made me mad because it was so unnecessary. yeah we get it, everyone’s trash! only margot and margot alone are worth harper’s respect! please. the book tried so hard to turn the story into ‘harper and margot against the world’ kinda thing but i wasn’t buying it.
"You're welcoming our doom," she whispered, playing with the neckline of his shirt. "No, sweetheart." He shook his head. "I'm giving us a real chance. I love you, Jane Ladling, and I'm never letting you go."
gah, i love this series so much. i have already said this but it's hard not love our jane, despite her ridiculousness. i relate to conrad. if i were him, i would fall for her too. in terms of the mystery side of the story, i still enjoyed the first one the most, but that doesn't mean i didn't find this one fun. as i go through this series, more and more characters begin to appear. sometimes, i became confused who was who. anyway, onto the next!
”Books should be shared with everyone who wants to open their minds and hearts to them. Keeping them, keeping knowledge, from people who needed it, that was the real crime.”
i’m so glad i made the right choice to pick up this book. mind you, this book hit my radar because of a negative review on twitter. me being me, of course i was intrigued enough to see if my opinion would be the same. spoiler: it’s not!
i hate that i suck at writing reviews for books i actually love but trust me when i say i enjoyed this book so much. it’s cozy, yet so real and meaningful. it’s about finding your place in the world, friendship, the importance of community, and striving to make capitalists kiss your ass. also, i never thought i would be so attached to a spider plant and a succulent, but here i am.
"A man's actions must align with his words and vice versa. If he says one thing but does another, don't waste your time, even if he makes you feel like he has the potential to give you exactly what you want. For example, if a potential partner states he is not seeking marriage, only sex, but you feel like he's falling for you, do not give him your heart. Do not try to fix him. You'll both only get hurt in the end."
🌳 3.5 rounded to 4 stars 🌳
this one was fun, delightful and surprisingly more heartfelt than i expected. i don’t mean to compare but i did enjoy the first book better. however, i believe this one has its own charms, simply because daphne and monty were just so charming.
"We're walking around so I can keep you to myself before the chaos ensues."
She swallowed a groan. "Hardly. You want to give me some commands and warnings."
"No commands or warnings. I'm beginning to accept your adrenaline junkie ways. You'll have to accept the fact that I will always, without exception, do everything I can to protect you."
this book wasn’t as fun as the first one but i enjoyed it regardless. it’s hard not to love jane and her propensity to getting herself in trouble.
”You are beautiful,” he says, voice deep and melodic. “Your words are beautiful. There is no this is more beautiful than that when it comes to you.”
this book was so good. despite employing tropes that some would consider cliche, i think the author managed to make this book feels original and fresh. i thoroughly enjoyed edwina and william’s back-and-forth banter. it was so delicious.
the only thing i’d like to add is that i could do without some of william’s pov chapters. i know, i know. sounds like a total blasphemy, and i really did like william as a character so it’s not that. i just genuinely think that not being privy to some of his thoughts would have added more thrill to the chase between them—at least for me!
