The Madness of Crowds by Louise Penny

i had a really hard time getting into this one. the beginning felt slow and  the hania daoud arc felt super random throughout the book. eventually, as the mystery was beginning to unravel, i began to feel that same excitement i do during a louise penny denouement.

for all the talk of the impact of abigail robbinson’s research on society in the beginning of the book, it was virtually unaddressed toward the end. i thought this was a missed opportunity: having glimpses of the news picking up her work and people getting more and more on board with it would have heightened the tensions through the slow middle of the book.

i also wasn’t 100% sure exactly what the solution was to the case, and why certain characters did certain things leading up to the murder.

this book is really not my usual genre, but it was highly recommended by a friend. i found the first part of the book difficult to get into as there was a lot of worldbuilding, and it’s set in a place that has been built up in a previous trilogy, but it really picked up and did not disappoint.

another good gamache book. the only thing i don’t get is why yvette nichol is continually portrayed as such a cartoonishly disgusting/awful person. seems a bit flat and overdone.

A triumph. I’m not a science fiction reader usually, but I loved The Martian so much that I decided to give Project Hail Mary a try… and I’m really glad I did. It’s a lot of the good parts of The Martian, also being a story of survival and scientific ingenuity, but this time it isn’t about one guy making it: it’s about the entire human civilization.

i really liked this book. i don’t normally read or enjoy romances, but this one came highly recommended. i’m glad i gave it a shot! it’s a romance, yes, but it still has a lot of substance. a wonderfully enjoyable read overall.

this book was exactly what i expected, which is disappointing because i’ve seen it highly recommended online. it’s probably good for its genre, which just isn’t for me. the first 80% of the book was far too slow, plot-wise.
