This book was a 50/50 for me.

The first half of the book was pretty slow, a little awkward for everyone. No literally the main character Cassie said how awkward every conversation with Aiden was in the beginning. I honestly almost DNFed because it was so slow and just wasn’t buying that they had any connection at all.

What kept me going was Sophie, Aiden’s daughter, and Wanda, Cassie’s best friends/motherly figure. Those relationships were sweet and funny.

HOWEVER. Once Aiden and Cassie confessed their feelings and finally started hooking up the book did a complete 180. The dialogue got better, the romance got better, there was more development. Overall the smut made everything else better too XD

Speaking of smut… damn this book was steamy! Very hot, very fun.

The third act breakup was little dumb, but honestly Aiden was such a sweetheart and Sophie was so sweet I just honestly enjoyed myself by the end of it all.

I flew through this book in about 24 hours and I’m looking forward to Lana’s next books which is a contemporary fantasy romance!

I am shaking and I want to write a comprehensive review for this because I have SOOOO many thoughts.

But my initial thoughts are WTF and WHY DID I NOT BEING THE SECOND BOOK WITH ME THIS WEEKEND?! I’m furious but also obsessed!

——————

Let me start off my saying that this book has everything I want in a book. It’s almost perfect for me and I hope that this review can reach a few people who will feel the same.

The Serpent & The Wings of Night follows Oraya, the adopted human daughter of Vincent, the Nightborn Vampire King. Oraya has lived her whole life in fear and training to enter the Kejari, a competition where contestants fight to the death to win a wish from the goddess of death, Nyaxia.

I really liked Oraya. I felt for her. She is constantly struggling with her own identity as she can’t seem to find a balance between her vampire upbringing and human body. She sees vampires as cold monsters and humans as weak and helpless. She feels she needs to change who she is in order to become worth something.

This is of course all fed by her complex relationship with Vincent, her father figure.

I went into this book without any idea what to expect. I felt her relationship with Vincent was so well done. His father side juxtaposed against his king side.  He loved Oraya and yet he was one of the cruelest, vicious characters. Ugh, I just love such complex characters like him.  I really felt for Oraya as the book progressed and she struggled with her emotions for him.

Then, of course we have Raihn. Raihn is a Nightborn Vampire, but from the opposite clan of Oraya’s father and so technically he’s her enemy. The two of them team up for the competition and oh my do things go exactly as I hoped they would. This is definitely a slow burn but it’s so worth the wait! Raihn is everything I love in a male lead *heart eyes*

The ending. Im not going to lie, I wasn’t shocked by the plot-twists at the end. If you read a lot of fantasy romance it was pretty classic. However, I was still NOT PREPARED. I was reeling! So proud of Oraya and yet so devastated for her! This is spoiler free but I will say that I that there was one thing that happened at the very end I was not happy with.

Overall, this is now one of my favorite fantasy-romance reads. There were definitely some flaws but I just enjoyed it so much I don’t care! If want high stakes, badass female lead, and a steamy slow burn romance this book is definitely for you!

Initial reaction: I loved it! It could have been five stars if it wasn’t for that bomb in the epilogue!

I absolutely loved this book. It was nothing like I expected but it was super duper cute and fluffy. I think I would have read it a lot faster if I wasn’t trying to annotate and tan the whole time.

I love dragons.

That’s the whole reason I read this book and honestly and I actually enjoyed it a lot lol.

I liked the teasing from our spicy dragon Kael and how he worshiped our MC from the moment he met her. I found Claudia to be fine, a little bit annoying but I guess she handled her situation well enough.

There was just enough plot to keep it interesting, because let’s be honest, we don’t pick up books with covers like this expecting iambic pentameter XD

I’ll be honest…. I would read book two!

I was expecting to much more from this book. All the others only got better as they went but I thought there would a lot more answers but honestly we didn’t get much more THE END.

I liked the fluffy moments between the Bonded as usual. However individually I felt like the men dissolved as individuals in this book.

Also we never got any real answer as to what was driving this whole conflict, how the god bonds got there and their purpose, etc. it was all very “just because I said so” lol

Also I really thought the last battle/confrontation with the Pain god would be more… I intense? Oli and her bond group were just too powerful for this conflict to even be believable. Nothing truly challenged them.

All of this was wrapped up in the last 80 pages of the book iand I just felt so unsatisfied :(

No I don’t think you understand… I’m OBSESSED!

I was supposed to be buddy reading this with my two of my friends and I’m ashamed to say… I flew ahead and completed it in 24 hours.

I was charmed by Tessa Dare’s writing from page one. It was illogical and entirely inevitable at the same time.

The whole idea of this book was absurdly romantic. I absolutely love how sweet it is. Every moment is so tender and pure. Logan and Maddie are so adorable together and on their own as individuals.

Maddie was a perfect historical romance heroine. She was a woman of her time and yet she was driven, independent, logical and still romantic, and soft.

Logan’s desire for family and love and to give him men a home they deserved after the war was such a wholesome motivation. I loved finally hearing him admit how Maddie’s letters affected him physically and emotionally.

This book was also hilarious! One scene in particular made me laugh, possible as much as I ever had in a book. It’s the scene with the poem for those who have read it. I hope you laughed as much as I did. I had literal (and I so mean that literally) tears in my eyes.

Finally, the s p I c e. Oh yes there is spice but honestly I found the anticipation, the slow burn, to be the sexiest part.

Overall this is mt first book by Tessa Dare but I endorse her books from here on! Read for a laugh, a sweet love, and steamy romance.

P.S. OMG I ALMOSF FORGOT TO GIVE MY FAVORITE CHARACTER GRANT A SHOUT OUT!

Favorite book in the series so far!! I feel like we got the most growth from all of the characters in this book.

I am obsessed with Oli’s dynamic with each of her bonds. I was SO HAPPY that Gabe really started coming into his own as well. I hope we see more of him because I feel like he’s the one bond that gets neglected a little bit compared to the others. Although I’ve been feeling like Atlas has been forgotten about in this one a little.

We’re building up to something with Nox too and I’m so excited!

Finally, there is someone bigger and badder than Silas Davies behind the Resistance. Someone with the power to inflict pain and probably has void eyes.

Also that ending!

Current Bond Ranking (how can I choose?!):

1. Gryphon
2. North
3. Gabe
4. Atlas
5. Nox

This is so hard to do now. I think Gryphon has been the most consistent, always in my top two! Atlas was holding the ranks for so long, but he just hasn’t been getting enough page time these days.

I also have a feeling that Nox could soar ahead in book 5.
