The cover for this one is wild: the woman's neck looks INSANE.

Once again, in the grand scheme of things nothing much happened. There was little to no progression on the main plot points.

Also, the more I read. the more high school the whole thing felt. Including, but not limited to, the out of control libido and ridiculous amount of swearing.

Jason was adorable and super sweet, but his character was flat and bland. And Rafe changed his tune from one moment to the next without explanation (aside from it being necessary for plot reasons).

IDK this book was weird. Lots of sex and violence and little else.

Hilarious how they went with three completely different people for the cover.

This one? Kidnapping, torture, escape, a little soccer football, plenty of sex, some fighting and a hysterectomy.

Still wish the characters had been given more dimension: Rafe and his grandfather, Mattie and her mom, Jordan with his parents and half-brother... there was so much to explore there, so much potential to give the characters depth, nuance and layers, but it was wasted.

Alex faded into the background.

Ant the ending, for me, felt like a huge cop out:
forcing Violet to lose her uterus was taking the easy way out as to not to have to come up with a way to explain how a single woman could possibly become Queen and mother to the heirs of two of the most powerful kingdoms of the world—pretty much the same reason this could never have worked out as RH.

I would have liked this trilogy to have stronger plots, with more deeply explored characters and themes and with the high school vibes turned way, way, way lower.

Hidden Power by Fiona Starr

Tackling Hidden Power was my first attempt at trying to thin out the long list of e-books I’ve downloaded over the last few years when the Stuff-Your-Kindle-Day type events roll around—and I then promptly forget all about LOL

It was, perhaps, not a great first pick to motivate me to carry on with my plan.

The story’s pacing was fairly jerky and, the vibe, all over the place. It felt like the author couldn’t decided if she wanted to go the route of light-hearted or serious. Also, the tenses were sort of all jumbled up:

“What’s the catch?” I asked.
Professor Storken looks surprised. “Catch? What do you mean?”

The insta-lust was out of control and then the book brusquely ended at a seemingly random point.

Throughout my reading journey, I kept wondering what was so special about our FMC, Avaline (aside from being a super rare Vox elemental), to have all these men—a professor included?!—so captivated and taken with her. I had zero grasp on who she was as person, aside from being a horndog with questionable morals when it came to dating—she was 100% cool with dating a dude with a committed girlfriend but categorically REFUSED to get involved with someone with a fiancé.

She was bland, unoriginal and forgettable. And it was utterly weird and glaringly conspicuous how it was never even touched upon or addressed in the slightest how she’d engaged in physical and emotional relationships with several men simultaneously. Was that common in this universe? Were the guys all chill with sharing the same woman? Did they even know they were low-key sharing a girlfriend?

There was no nuance or layers to this book, which to be fair, it was super short and only the first installment of a series, but still. There was no substance, no depth to it, and the few conflicts that arose got fixed almost instantaneously with little or no effort. Things felt half baked and barely thought through. This was an unsatisfying read all around and I won’t be continuing with the series.

It was kinky AF. I like smut, but this one had me clenching in phantom discomfort LOL

Honestly, I didn't come here expecting masterful relationship development and fully fleshed out characters. Erotica is about the physical, not the emotional. That being said, Harper and Will were cute together. They'll for sure have an interesting time telling family and friends the story of how they met and fell in love.

If The Hunger Games books had been a fantasy story with a rehash of the same plot points throughout all three books, it would have been something like Untamed Magic.

The first book, Gift of the Gods, was great. I'd read that one and stop there. It's a fairly predictable plot, so you can already guess how the story ends without having to wade through the other two books.

The Tower by Aurelia Fray

I’ve been casually lurking on Booksprout for quite a while now, but nothing had taken my fancy until The Tower. I read the first nine-ish chapters that were available for a preview on the platform and I was intrigued.

description

Right out of the gate, I was hit with such a positive and inspiring dedication:

Most people read to escape because life is sometimes dark, or scary, or hard, but I wrote this book to represent the bravest of us, who experience the worst of the world and still come out fighting.
Some days are harder than others, and sometimes the darkness eclipses the light, but you’ve got to keep getting back up.
Stand strong.
You’re worth a million of them and they know it.

And then came a flurry of writing so immersive, it was like the words took shape and solidified around me to give me a front row seat to both see and feel what was going on: The bleakness and oppressiveness of Jules’ daily life… a threadbare existence of stark hopelessness and violent bursts, of grim determination and constant adversity. It was like everything was covered by a gloomy gray film—until there was red.

description

A man got shot in the stairwell of her run-down apartment building and she was the only one there to help. And thus the course of her existence was abruptly and intrinsically changed.

Suddenly, a dark cloud of a man was forcefully rolling into her life like an inescapable storm. Drenching her and seeping through her, and inserting himself into every crack there was to find. Dax was such a contradiction: hard, but soft; comfortable, but scary; understanding yet intimidating. And always accompanied by his trusty BFF and head of security, Aiden.

Those first few chapters had me captivated and wanting to learn more about these powerful and mysterious men, and the scrappy girl with an iron spine that had found herself in the wrong place at the wrong time—or, perhaps, it was the right place and right time.

Reading this book made me feel like my brain was rioting inside my skull in an attempt to escape the unusual punishment I was inflicting on it.

It also made me feel bad for the author—she paid someone to edit her work, and still that was what she put out? Girl got scammed.

Upfront, I'm giving it two stars only because I'm a simp for RH with a nice dash of enemies to lovers and in an utopic world the premise Dragon Rejected is based on could have spawned an amazing book. But realistically, this was a one star read with writing so poor it felt like I was reading something penned by a teenage girl who'd just recently discovered the world of fantasy tropes.
