Hidden Power by Fiona Starr

2.5

2.5 ⭐

Tackling Hidden Power was my first attempt at trying to thin out the long list of e-books I’ve downloaded over the last few years when the Stuff-Your-Kindle-Day type events roll around—and I then promptly forget all about LOL

It was, perhaps, not a great first pick to motivate me to carry on with my plan.

The story’s pacing was fairly jerky and, the vibe, all over the place. It felt like the author couldn’t decided if she wanted to go the route of light-hearted or serious. Also, the tenses were sort of all jumbled up:

“What’s the catch?” I asked.
Professor Storken looks surprised. “Catch? What do you mean?”

The insta-lust was out of control and then the book brusquely ended at a seemingly random point.

Throughout my reading journey, I kept wondering what was so special about our FMC, Avaline (aside from being a super rare Vox elemental), to have all these men—a professor included?!—so captivated and taken with her. I had zero grasp on who she was as person, aside from being a horndog with questionable morals when it came to dating—she was 100% cool with dating a dude with a committed girlfriend but categorically REFUSED to get involved with someone with a fiancé.

She was bland, unoriginal and forgettable. And it was utterly weird and glaringly conspicuous how it was never even touched upon or addressed in the slightest how she’d engaged in physical and emotional relationships with several men simultaneously. Was that common in this universe? Were the guys all chill with sharing the same woman? Did they even know they were low-key sharing a girlfriend?

There was no nuance or layers to this book, which to be fair, it was super short and only the first installment of a series, but still. There was no substance, no depth to it, and the few conflicts that arose got fixed almost instantaneously with little or no effort. Things felt half baked and barely thought through. This was an unsatisfying read all around and I won’t be continuing with the series.
