THE WRITING IN THIS BOOK IS SO FUCKING GOOD. I love the use of numbers throughout! And the way this book is written is so addicting. The metaphors and the imagery continuing through the story is AHHHHH! And the diary format crossing over into Juliette’s live with the crossed out sentences? AMAZING!

As for the characters, I’ve read the series before and know that we end up liking Warner but HOLY SHIT why?? He is so annoying in this book and it is INFURIATING. Firstly, what is with him calling a stranger “love”, talk about CREEPY.

So one star taken away because Warner makes me unbelievably angry. Amazing book (and series).

This series is my comfort series and I’ll forever love it but there was a MAJOY inconsistency in this book which really irked me. At the beginning of the book when Stormchaser spoke to Dell about her last day of school it was written that “tomorrow was her sixteenth birthday”, however MUCH later in the story (3rd day in Piloria) Stormchaser awakens to Reban telling her happy birthday. To me this just seemed sloppy and gross, to have such a huge plot hole so apparent in the story.

Otherwise the book is excellent, I love the relationship building between Lincoln and Storm, as well as Leif and Jesa, and Reban and Storm.

I love the world building and the way Storm seems so conflicted about what they’re doing. I like how her beliefs are being challenged throughout the book. However I think the story would be better suited to a longer format, to really delve into the characters and world.

All in all, pretty good book outside of the HUGE plot hole.

TLDR of the review: AHHHHHHHHH SO GOOD

(Many swear words in this review)

Firstly, the writing in this book is fucking brilliant. Every line is so meticulously thought out and the metaphors and analogies Mafi has used follow through the entire book. Honestly the best YA books I have ever read. Here is a quote which is a great example of what I mean:

“So I have to keep remembering that Warner and I are 2 different words.
We are synonyms but not the same.
Synonyms know each other like old colleagues, like a set of friends who’ve seen the world together. They swap stories, reminisce about their origins and forget that though they are similar, they are entirely different, and though they share a certain set of attributes, one can never be the other. Because a quiet night is not the same as a silent one, a firm man is not the same as a steady one, and a bright light is not the same as a brilliant one because the way they wedge themselves into a sentence changes everything.
They are not the same.”

The “rambling diary of thoughts” works so well for this series and what it is!! You can FEEL Juliette through the writing. Through the repetition and the run on sentences and it feels like you are inside her mind and it’s fucking incredible!!

This book made me feel SO MANY different things so here is a summary of my emotions:

WARNING! Slight spoilers ahead and also I am always very sympathetic to the MC and imagine myself as them, so take my words with a grain of salt. Finally, I love self pity. In my mind, the MC can do no wrong.

1. Fury and self-pity. The whole “people getting mad at Juliette for not adjusting, and for being scared to talk to people, and for getting mad over Adam’s “consensual” torture” is FUCKING UNBELIEVABLE. This whole part of the book made me so stressed over Juliette’s pain, and I was so mad at Castle and Kenji.

2. Annoyance. What is it with YA characters and NOT TALKING WITH THEIR ROMANTIC PARTNERS?!!???! LIKE PULL YOURSELF TOGETHER YOU PIECE OF SHIT.

3. Pissed off. Adam was so annoying to Juliette after you know what. In my opinion, he was being selfish and was not looking at the situation from Juliette’s point of view. He didn’t care that what she was doing for him was hurting her, he just kept pushing and pushing and putting her in a shit position. SO ANNOYING.

4. Understanding. The whole big about Warner. I remember now why we come to like him.

5. Pissed again. AHHH KENJI YOU’RE SO ANNOYING. IT WASN’T HER!!! And I felt so bad for Juliette during this bit.

Can’t really remember my other emotions so the end.

Warning before I start: this is not going to be a coherent review, but a frantic rant on how much I hate Adam. Also, here is your warning for swearing…

Starting with the positives of this book: I loved reading about Juliette and her behaviour from an outside perspective, rather than seeing everything through Juliette’s eyes. It offered a lot in terms of narrator reliability; we see what Adam is like as a person rather than Juliette’s point of view, where she (sorry J, love you) sees him as flawless and amazing and OHH ADAM and blah blah blah, so that was refreshing and enlightening.

Also, Kenji is great, love him, saving grace for this novella. All hail Kenji Kishimoto
