I think all the things I disliked about this book were intentional but that doesn’t mean they were good choices. I felt like the ‘villain’ of the story was lost through the middle and for a while it was just a very boring detailed story about the various slightly unnerving settings. Ambiguity about the bad guy isn’t a bad thing in a thriller but also there needs to be some sort of evil in order for suspense to build and actually mean something. I think this book could’ve been half or even a quarter of the length and still been pretty effective.
(EDIT: a year and a half after reading this book I still think of it often. It’s getting a .5 star bump in rating simply for the lasting power in my brain. Other thriller plots slip right out of my brain but this one has stuck around) I was in fact thrilled by this thriller it definitely did its job. Definitly check out content warnings but overall I enjoyed the read. Enjoyed might be a strong word because the plot is A Lot at times but overall good. mild spoiler that's not truly a spoiler ahead regarding the identity of the villain of the story I totally called the identity of the bad guy but there was no way I was going to call what they actually DID
A fantastic series, I eat every book up like a scrumptious little meal. absolutely devour them. This book left me in such a state that I went out and bought the next one the very next day. I am a library book enjoyer and hater of hardcovers and I bought the golden enclaves in a hardcover
God what a banger of a book. I didn't want to finish it because I didn't want the series to end. Everything gets tied up in a nice little bow but not so tight that you cant imagine the characters continuing on with their stories after you put down the books.
Ms. O'leary really loves to take some twists and turns in books that make you hate the characters and not want to keep reading. But overall a fun read, I do really appreciate when authors are willing to have characters be assholes but not be huge villains or anything. I think a common theme in the books I've read of hers are characters that act like real people for better or for worse.
I liked this book, but I preferred the other greek retellings I read. I think this one was the easiest to read of them but that could also just be that I've gotten used to the style. Not bad but I won't be knocking down anyone's doors to recommend it.
Do not read this if you are prone to falling into diet culture or health fads. Its great info and its really cool but also I could see someone falling in too deep.
I'm sorry in advance for this review basically just being me comparing two books but I recently read the atlas six, and it left me wanting more in a bad way. This book gave me exactly what I wanted from the atlas six, the pace was the right speed for me, and it wasn't too pretentious but didn't read super YA or anything. I was left wanting more in a good way after finishing a deadly education, I wanted more story and more sequels.
I do not regret reading this book and I generally recommend it but I've got beef with it for sure. I think it's pretty fucking pompous and sure that's academia or whatever but as someone in academia, I would deck any of my co-workers if they were even half as uppity as this book was. I also think there's simultaneously too much information and not enough info about how the magic system works in this world. I understand that this book is intended to be part of a series but it feels very incomplete.
