We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

Wow... I am honestly not sure where to start. There is so much in this little story. At first glance it is a trope teen summer romance best for beach reading and recovering from a more intense story. Do not be fooled; it holds far more than the pages within. There are discusses of racism, elitism, wealthy, privilege and holding far too much inside. There are characters who are not yet formed and so deliberate in their unformed beauty. There is sickness and there is the not dealing with sickness. And there is a fabulous twist that changes everything in the story in the last fifteen pages.

"Your voice. Your weapon."
This is one of the most stunning debut novels I have ever read. From the moment you meant Starr Carter she is unapologetically flawed and perfect. She is terrified but brave; loving but angry and stuck between two cultures and groups that both help to define her.
Ms Thomas' narrative is engaging from the first page and emotional until the end. This book is timely, accessibly and a must read for students in today's world and I cannot recommend it enough.

Well... I am entirely unsure how to sum up my feelings about this rambling odyssey. This is my first foray in to Gaiman's twisted and strange world view. (I wasn't thrilled with his films so I never was interested in his stories.) I have to say that after this it might be hard to enjoy another such unsettling story. I adored the main character - Shadow - I rarely have engaged and found a main character so irreverent, engaging and utterly without his own story within the text. (Eventually he got there but it took 700 pages...) This brick of a novel is a but overwhelming to start but I highly recommend to people who enjoy mythology, Don-Quixote like tales or just odd magical realism that wanders through states of being (and for a good chunk of time literal states.) If you are lucky enough get ahold of the version that has the amended scene where Shadow meets Christ. It is utterly brilliant and I wish I could watch people's minds be blown by it.

The crossover of Deep Space 9 and Next Generation casts with the current blockbuster version was awesomely done without feeling too forced.

I wait for my annual Joe Gunther book to be in my stocking every Christmas and this is one of the best in years! A lot of recall to earlier Gunther mysteries (Dan Kravitz!), the changing face of Vermont and the fact that Vermont is so often at the whim of our larger more powerful neighboring states.

Decided this is the year I am doing a full reread of Harry Potter! Started off with a serious dose of nostalgia for some Sorcerer's Stone.

Book 2 down - still not my favorite of the series but seeing the ridiculousness of Lockhart again was great fun!
