Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates

Required reading, indeed! I am mesmerized by Ta Nehisi Coates writing and i can’t believe that no one saw his gift (or maybe intentionally ignored it 😡). We are so blessed to have him and his poetic words now 🙏🏼  I loved the way he answered such momental questions and how the Dreamers have engineered everything including their own forgetting. That part stuck out to me because there’s a book called The Memory Police where a forgetting was engineered as well. Very interesting and harrowing to think about the danger of forgetting.

Starting off 2025 wonderfully with my second five star read!!! I thought I loved Josh Malerman before but I think this book just solidified him as an all time favorite author.

I was in shock and total confusion after that ending and went down the biggest Reddit rabbit hole (and loved every second of it). If you get confused by the ending, definitely check out the couple of Reddit threads on this. The theories are fascinating and I think the ending is a mixture of all of them 😂 The ending is an open-ish one which would normally annoy me but it was explained just enough that I loved it (I welcomed the confusion and shock while I tried to process this masterpiece).

Now that I think about it, this reminded me a bit of Imaginary Friend by Stephen Chbosky (another all time favorite horror novel) in the ways that Other Mother tries to get Bela. Incredibly unique premise and take on possession, entities, trauma, and more. My head is still reeling but with a smile on my face.

Did not finish book. Stopped at 42%.
Im finally calling it. I stopped reading this over a week ago. I don’t like the time shift that happens not even 300 pages into this tome. Could honestly care less about the plot now that, on top of moving in time a century, we’re following a whole new cast of characters! And there are ALOT. No thank you. This book bored me as much as it pissed me off. The only reason I made it as far as I did before quitting was the audiobook. But even that couldn’t convince me to pick it back up again after awhile.

The book is basically the script for the movie. If you’ve seen it, you’ve read the book. There is no difference. The book goes into a tiny bit of detail but nothing that makes a great difference between it and the movie. The book is more racist. There are two scenes with a Black and Japanese person that didn’t have to be in the book.

One cool thing is that the actress in the film, Mia Farrow, narrates the book. So I was remembering all the scenes from the movie with her voice narrating. She has a really nice voice and she did a great job.

I believe this is the first non-fiction book I’ve ever read physically. I usually exclusively listen to non-fiction books but I might start changing that after reading Ta-Nehisi Coates writing. Incredibly profound, honest and astounding.

This book came on my radar after a famous Booktuber, Kayla (aka BooksandLala), loved this and said that one of the essays was about Palestine. I will read anything and everything about Palestine. This subject has truly been my gateway into reading more non-fiction.

I loved this. All the of essays are interconnected so seamlessly and I loved the placement of the essay about Ta Nehesi Coates time in Palestine being the last one. It packed a really hard punch and imo, elevated this collection of three essays. I want a copy of this just for the Palestine alone. The quotes that I want to remember from this are more than any fiction book I’ve ever read.

This book talks about writing and the narratives that we tell ourselves, the narratives that we are told and the truth. They can be three separate things. His personal journey discovering the true message from all the false narratives was enlightening and so relatable. Ta-Nehesi is an incredible writer and a must-read author. I feel so grateful to have such a prolific writer publishing hard truths that we all need to hear.

I kind of disagree with this being the Booker Prize winner. The book that won last year, Prophet Song, was fantastic. Orbital? I wouldn’t even call it a novel. It was poetry. The musings of six astronauts in a day of their lives in space. Was it beautiful? Certainly. But if you’re looking for a sci-fi book, this won’t be for you. It just takes place in space. This is a meditation of Earth and our relationship to it.

It’s a bit repetitive with the poetic language it uses and I’m glad it was only 200 pages. Any longer and it would have felt too long for a book that’s supposed to take place over a 24-hour period.

Absolutely, beautifully written and translated. My favorite translated fiction of this year. So, so happy I decided to read this for my last reading wrap up of 2024.

A true local perspective on what it means to be a Palestinian, to live in Gaza, a global story that everyone knows but least understands.

This was SOOO good!!! It’s a mixed bag but I enjoyed most of these. I loved that the stories focused on all different types of sexual orientations and ages. It was beautiful and hot as hell 🥵🥵🥵 This collection is SPICY!!! Latina authors know how to write spice 😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨 one thing that drove me nuts was these were too short!!! They didn’t even feel like stories, they felt like scenes in a story. Super brief.

The concept of this was excellent and incredibly intriguing but also a bit ambitious. The execution was slow-paced and messy. I almost DNFed this at around the 270 pg mark because of how slow this book was. Luckily, that’s right when the best twist in this book happened that propelled me to finish it.

Looking through other reviews, I couldn’t help but laugh when someone pointed that at the character who is supposed to be the reincarnated God of Knowledge speaks differently from everyone else. And n o t in the way you would think the God of Knowledge would talk 😂🤣

I really loved the LGBTQIA+ rep in here. A demiromantic trans indigenous MC? Hell yeah. There’s also a polyamorous relationship in here and I found it to be sooooo hot.  🥵

I am clearly not the right crowd for this book. I thought it was incredibly boring, more character-driven than plot and had too many POVs.

I’m sad I didn’t like this because I read The Marrow Thieves earlier this year and L O V E D that. I really thought I would love her story about witches but alas…here we are, in Disappointment Land 🙃🙃🙃🙃
