I almost always love everything by CL but this missed the mark for me.

1) I hate that R&M had sex not once but twice when Millie was drunk/tipsy. It felt very uncomfortable.
2) I really didn’t *like* either of them. He was pretentious sometimes and she was just annoying.
3) Lastly - I feel like I didn’t actually see them fall in love. It was fast and everything felt like it happened off page. I know we had the letters to each other but that still didn’t feel like enough since we only saw like 20 of them combined.

This is the first time I’ve rated a CL book lower than 3, and I think it might be the first time I’ve disliked characters.

I truly understand why people love this book.
I think maybe the way it’s written just isn’t for me?
There were some painful vignettes in this though (beautiful & cruel) and some that were just so sad (Papa who wakes up tired in the dark).

I didn’t expect this graphic novel to hit me as hard as it did. I also didn’t think I would learn so much in 288 pages. I plan to continue learning about this time in history since I absolutely was not taught this in school, and that’s a shame.

I’m still struggling with losing my mom 2 years ago and my grief still feels very raw sometimes.
With that said, this book was hard for me and took me almost a week because it was so real and so painful and so heavy. This book hurt me. But not in a bad way. Just in a “I understand grief and I don’t want to” way.

I LOVED the flow of this collection. It was put together in a very smart and lovely way. Each section got better throughout but each section was better than the last.

My favorite of the collection: some people don’t even have to die to haunt you (ghosts)

I’ve loved this series up until this one. This was just…fine. I didn’t like how fast it was or how it ended. It feels very lackluster in storytelling.

There’s an absolute reason why this series is so beloved. Seeing John Lewis’ life and story in graphic novel form really hits differently. It gives you the picture of his life as a kid and in Congress.

I loved learning about his activism from a young age. I also think it’s important to realize that John Lewis only died 2.5 years ago, and when he was a kid, segregation was his life. Things John Lewis witnessed: Brown v Board of Edu ruling; Emmett Till murder; Rosa Parks refusing to move; he met and more

While segregation is something many people want you to see as so long ago, there are so many people still alive who lived through it. And I don’t think enough white people remember that.

The last school to desegregate happened in 2016. Racism is alive and well and that history that was so long ago just happened.
