There’s an absolute reason why this series is so beloved. Seeing John Lewis’ life and story in graphic novel form really hits differently. It gives you the picture of his life as a kid and in Congress.
I loved learning about his activism from a young age. I also think it’s important to realize that John Lewis only died 2.5 years ago, and when he was a kid, segregation was his life. Things John Lewis witnessed: Brown v Board of Edu ruling; Emmett Till murder; Rosa Parks refusing to move; he met and more
While segregation is something many people want you to see as so long ago, there are so many people still alive who lived through it. And I don’t think enough white people remember that.
The last school to desegregate happened in 2016. Racism is alive and well and that history that was so long ago just happened.
