Gender and Immortality: Heroines in Ancient Greek Myth and Cult by Deborah J. Lyons
5.0
This is one of three books for my research thesis that I read all the way through, because it wasn't just its points about Helen that I enjoyed. I loved reading a really feminine based scholarship on Immortality concerning Ancient Greek women.
It didn't read like feminist propaganda for women in Greek religion, which I appreciated immensely.
In fact, the central points of this book are pretty similar to my thesis (The Cult of Helen: Heroine and Goddess; and how these two roles could stand on their own, merge, or be symbiotic).
Beautiful written, well referenced.
An easy 5 stars.

Helen Troy by Laurie Maguire
5.0
Finished it in a few hours, even with putting sticky notes throughout for my major thesis - that's how much I enjoyed this book.
Maguire presents a literary biography unlike any I've ever seen. She really goes to great depths to explore as much of the literature surrounding Helen, and how each has its own impact on shaping her character.
She shows no great bias towards any authors; she does not favour nor reject anyone.
While not quite delving into the mythology was her primary statement, that it was purely the literary biography she desired, aspects of myth and religion couldn't well be ignored. It is because of that fact that I found sources that were only vaguely referenced in other historical based works, which has helped IMMENSELY for this thesis.
I've always loved Helen. This makes me love her more.

Avery by Charlotte McConaghy
5.0
Oh my gosh - Charlotte McConaghy has done it again with another outstanding high fantasy novel. I'm in love with the worlds of Pirenti and Kaya; I'm totally head over heels for Ambrose and Ava; am quite emotional over the ending for Roselyn and Thorne - he truly learnt redemption and sacrifice. .
I just LOVE this so much

Maid of Deception by Jennifer McGowan
3.0
Ok, so Beatrice's POV wasn't so tiring after all. Still, the first few chapters were such a chore. Totally saw the romance coming. Didn't expect a lot of the betrayal, conniving and whatnot from members such as Cavanaugh, Alasdair, and even Elizabeth herself. Was interesting to read about the new developments going on with the "Maids of Honor", though I'm sorely disappointed that they didn't seem as involved in this novel as the previous one. Good to see that Meg and Rafe are still together.
Beatrice is so bloody fantastic. Brilliant even. She could even be compared to Anne Boleyn.
Marry me Alasdair <3
