Get Well Soon: History's Worst Plagues and the Heroes Who Fought Them by Jennifer Wright

Disgusting and fascinating. Read if you like medical history, weird science facts, and things that are gross.
Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach

The bizarre world of corpses exposed! A morbidly interesting book for anyone at all curious about what happens, or can happen, to your body after you die. I know that because of this book I have started to think more seriously about donating organs, DNRs, and green burial practices. #DeathPositive
How to Be Parisian Wherever You Are: Love, Style, and Bad Habits by Audrey Diwan, Caroline de Maigret, Anne Berest
4.0
What a cute book! I was looking for something silly to read when I turned 30, and this was it. While I embody none of these things it was fascinating to learn about what might typify a Parisienne.
Spook: Science Tackles the Afterlife by Mary Roach
4.0
My big take-away was that for most of our modern history with the supernatural, paranormal investigation was viewed as truly scientific investigation. For audiences of the late 19th and early 20th centuries specifically, the supernatural wasn't necessarily farcical or subject to hyperbole. The rigor of the experiments is mind-boggling absolutely delightful. Not my favorite Roach book but still incredibly informative and told with her characteristic wit.
Crazy Brave: A Memoir by Joy Harjo

As part of my on-going quest to read more Oklahoma stories I highly recommend Crazy Brave. Enlightening, poetic, and brutal - it's uniquely Oklahoma. Crazy Brave tells a story often marginalized and overlooked.
Ghostland: An American History in Haunted Places by Colin Dickey
5.0
A must-read if you're interested in our cultural fascination of hauntings and ghost stories. Mad props to Dickey for discussing black, coastal/Southern ghost stories and other haunted oral histories during the WPA era. This is not a component of America's haunted history that gets much/any attention and I was delighted to see it here.
My Life in France by Julia Child, Alex Prud'homme
5.0
What a precious story. Not only is Julia Child an amazing badass with a fascinating career, this book just reaffirmed for me that the Greatest Generation was just that - like, what the fuck *didn't* you do, JC?! This book made me want be bold in all things and eat great food along the way.
The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid: A Memoir by Bill Bryson

My first Bill Bryson read! Good lord, was this hilarious. A wonderful coming of age story about the Baby Boomer generation that will last for the ages.
Shocked: Adventures in Bringing Back the Recently Dead by David Casarett

The weird and wonderful body! A concise history of methods of revival and what actually happens when we come back from the dead.
